Guest guest
They can be used for many things, but mostly you drink them. Kombucha is considered the champagne of the pro-biotic world, and is named " Elixir of the Gods " for a good reason. Kefir is like a cross between yogurt and milk. They are natural pro-biotics and produce excellent needed good bacteria in your digestive system. Kombucha is also good for the stomach and spleen. They also say Kombucha helps to clear up many health problems. Sasha -- Re: kombucha and kefir I am new to this site. Would you please explain how these items are used? Many thanks! Guest guest
As far as I know there is no reason not to consume either one whenever you want. They are foods not medication. I drink Kombucha whenever the mood strikes...same applies with Kefir though I typically consume it as Laban (soft sour cheese). Guest guest
My rule of thumb is let your own body be your guide. I personally have both with every meal and even in between- I no longer ration my brews, but drink as much of each as I feel like each day. Some days I don't feel like Kefir other days thats all I want, but normally I drink both along with Water Kefir when its available. Just don't forget about your plain water. Water is even more important while you are drinking these concoctions. How Much? Again let your own body be your guide. zoe > Hi, I have a question that may have been asked many times, but since > I'm new, here goes. I am currently brewing both Kombucha and Milk > Kefir. Guest guest
kombucha tea Kefir_making There are folks on these lists who will send you starters for the postage. One of the lists (I forget which one) has recently posted that no sales allowed on the lists except by the owner. But if you look in the Files, there are members who will send you starters. Usually I pay $7 by Paypal for starters. There are also in the Files great suggestions for successful brewing. Personally I use much more kombucha than kefir, since my source of good raw milk is seasonal. Gayla Always Enough RanchAcampo, Californiahttp://bouncinghoofs.com/alwaysenough.htmlaeranch@... Guest guest
Hi Melody, How long did it take for your grains to loose their gooiness? I can't imagine any bacteria surviving the bleach. Are you sure it wasn't the bleach? :-) Also, how do raisins fatten your scoby? I've never heard of that. Is it something that a lot of you do? Thanks, Rodrick Re: Kombucha and kefir You would be suprised how resistant the strains can be. However, I did notice that my kefir grains lost their gooiness and now are more like little clumps. I was using a shared strainer and even though I washed it with bleach and hot water I think it did affect my kefir grains. I never had a problem until I started using the strainer to strain out the raisins I had in it. I use raisins to fatten my scoby up.
Guest guest
Because this is Yeast and bacteria. You don't want more yeast in your body. The allergic reaction that people have could be from some of the bacteria that is fermented. Not knowing all the bacteria, adding yeast and sugar is just not a good combo with anyone that is immune compromised. I just don't do anything before I research it. Kefir has probiotics, a healthy bacteria that already lives in a healthy intestinal system. Kefir is not right for everyone. Anyone with allergies to dairy cannot tolerate it. Like me. Kefir for other's work great. Does that answer your question? Guest guest
Sue, sort of. Its just all so confusing for me. I'm trying so hard to eat healthier and find better alternatives and its like a big puzzle for me(the kid that is like 5,000 pieces that all look like grassland) I'll get it eventually. It just sems like 1 step forward and 2 back a lot of the time. that probably doesn't make sense to you becasue you grew up eatng healthy. My mom fed me well with good food growing up, but I also had hostess cupcakes, chips, pizza, fast food, etc etc etc. Those things are still part of my life. In adition, my husband brings home things from the restaurant. Sometimes good things like veggie stir fries(mmm) and sometimes not so good(donuts, eclaires, and what came home last night- a deep fried chimichange cheesecake with dark chocolate in it(he made a point to tell me it was the dark healthy chocolate LOL) I don't think he is consciounsly sabotaging attempts to eat better. He just gets really excited about these things (knows that I like them) and wants to share- its hard to explain him somtimes I tell you all this, becsue it is imperative that I find substitutes for things like this in my life or I lose my willlpower towards all these naughtly goodies in my fridge.
