Someone mentioned eating kale raw also, but I can't imagine that---I boil kale for a looong time to get it tender, maybe I'm missing something?? Sophia Re: Collard greens/ Welcome Sophia! And I'm from the opposite end of the country - Washington state. No, do not steam the collard greens. I think it says at the bottom of the recipe to cut out the stem part. They are NOT stringy and tough. I was very surprised the first time I ate them because I was expecting tough and strong, but they are very tender and mild.
