Heidi,

Tahini is a staple of Middle Eastern cooking. It is made into a spread/pate on

its own with water, lemon juice garlic, olive oil and sometimes other spices.

It is also an essential ingredient in Hummus, a garbanzo bean spread and baba

ganush a kind of eggplant salad. Living in Israel, its a staple in our house.

I add it to many things (rice milk, fruit mix, with nuts..) for calories,

protein and calcium. I doubt that you'll find it at your local market in

. Although I could be wrong. But I'm pretty sure that you can buy it at

Trader Joes. I don't know if your kids will like it, but for the adults, it is

definitely worth trying.

I'm not familiar with tahini--is that something that is found at a regular

grocery store, or do you need to go to a health food store for that?

Thanks!

I can't recall seeing Tahini at the Trader Joe's near me but it is available

at Whole Foods Market and other health food stores, as well as middle eastern

markets (we have lots of them in So. Cal).

Tahini is a paste made from ground sesame seeds. It is like peanut butter but made from sesame seeds. There are several available options when you purchase tahini. The first option involves the sesame seed hulls. Tahini made from unhulled sesame seeds is more nutrient-rich than tahini made from hulled seeds, but it is also more bitter. Since both versions would still make for good food choices, you can let your taste buds decide which is more pleasing to you. Roasted versus raw is another choice you have to make when it comes to selecting tahini. Raw (non-roasted) tahini is sufficiently higher in nutrient content, and it's believed it's the better choice here. Some manufacturers add additional oils to their tahini. It is recommended purchasing tahini with no added oils (pure ground sesame seeds). Finally, there is the option of a certified organic tahini. As with all of the World's Healthiest Foods, it is strongly recommended this

organic option. Suzi List Owner health/ http://360./suziesgoats What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.
