Greetings from CHES.

CHES works with children affected, infected, vulnerable and also orphans since

more than a decade. We also run an institutional care for orphans. To begin with

we too had difficulty in getting baby sitters. When we employed routine baby

sitters we found them discriminating the children so we shifted to women living

with HIV who were destituted and thrown out of families as baby sitters and they

are doing an excellent job. Plz link with local positive network to get this

help.

Dear Manorama ji,

Many thanks. We are facing same problems which you have gone through,

the reason for this email. I am sure we can learn from your experiences and

request you to help us in search of such workers/ carers.

Unfortunately there is no link group in this region and officially there are no

HIV positive people as per Govt. records, though in practice there are many and

on an average one case is tested positive every week in every laboratory, but we

can not approach those people and they do not want to come to us or tell any one

else for their HIV status for well known reasons and keep spreading it silently.

I hope you can help us with our quest from among the people working with you or

known to you.

I believe probably one way to get over these problems is to make it

statutory requirement to inform about the status to all agencies and

offices as is the case in any infectious disease.

In that case the risks will be reduced, though it may have other repercussions

for these people. Of course education, awareness and availability of treatment

will help in long term, but by then it may be too late. As such India has the

largest or second largest HIV population and this needs to be tackled as an

epidemic to control, otherwise it is going to be disaster. Thanks, with regards

and best wishes,

Dr.B.K.Sharma,
