Guest guest Posted August 25, 2005 Report Share Posted August 25, 2005 Wake up to HIV/AIDS, hair dressers told TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2005 02:33:47 AM ] Citibank NRI Offer CHANDIGARH: The Citizens Awareness Group in collaboration with the State AIDS Control Society, UT Chandigarh organised a seminar on HIV/AIDS for hair dressers, roadside barbers and beauty parlours at Female Literacy House, Sector 42 to create awareness on HIV/AIDS. Speaking at the seminar, Dr Inderjit Kaur Walia, Director Health Services, UT Chandigarh highlighted the precautionary measures to be adopted to curtail the HIV/AIDS. She also said, already 1,500 cases of HIV positive had been identified in Chandigarh itself. She lauded the efforts of the society in collaborating with various NGOs to generate awareness about HIV/AIDS and provide the best possible testing and counselling facilities to the patients from the entire region. Surinder Verma, Chairman, Citizens Awareness Group explained, how hair dressers and beauty parlours are high risk professions due to the nature of their trade. He stressed the need for the use of hygienic methods in the trade. Verma said: " To avoid the spread of infection, barbers should make use of sterilised or disposable razor. The best policy is to use fresh blade after every shave. The IEC project for awareness generation among hair dressers and beauty parlours was started on February 19 from Female Literacy House and within this period about 2,200 individual counselling sessions have been held.
