Guest guest
Cold Remedies & Lozenges If you use ROBITUSSIN, NYQUIL or HALLS LOZENGES - Instead try ZINC LOZENGES, VITAMIN C, N-ACEYTL-CYSTEINE and/or WILLOW BARK. Robitussin, NyQuil, and Halls cough drops and lozenges are very popular OTC drugs. But all they all they do, at best, is relieve cold symptoms temporarily. You can do more than that with vitamins, minerals and herbs. If you feel a cold coming on, act fast: Pick up some ZINC LOZENGES at a health food store, and suck on one every two waking hours. According to research Cleveland Clinic, doing so greatly relieves cold symptoms and cuts the length of a cold by almost half, from about 7.6 to 4.4 days. The lozenges are much more effective when taken at the start of a cold rather than after you’re very sick. Stop taking them when you have recovered. High does of VITAMIN C –2 to 6 gm daily – can also ease cold symptoms. Divide the dose so you take the vitamin several times during the day and follow the "bowel tolerance" concept. If you start to develop diarrhea, reduce your dose slightly. According to Carthcart, M.D., of Los Altos, Calif., the amounts just below what causes loose stools is your ideal does. High doses of N-ACETYLCYSTEINE, a form of the amino acid cysteine, also relieves cold and flu symptoms – and can even bolster the immune system against AIDS. Try 1,000 to 2,000 mg. daily. Some people use Willow Bark as an aspirin substitute. The bark contains the same active ingredient. Don't forget Complete tonic, echinacea and astralagus!! Guest guest
I am on Sprycel. What is a Plural Efusion? [ ] Colds Does anyone else have a problem getting over colds? The kids shared their cold with me a few weeks back, and it just keeps lingering. I keep thinking I'm pretty much over it, but if I get a bad night of sleep or get worn down, I wake up the next day with the same cough and runny nose. Guest guest
I had fluid build up in my lungs and they had to drain it. Very painful!!!! for me at least. But they took me off Sprycel as that is a side effect. so if you get shortness of breath or a bad cough--go and get a chest Xray. Guest guest
My mother has had a cold for about a week now. She is doing better but I can still tell she is congested and still has a mild cough. She was placed on an antibiotic prophylactically as soon as she caught it. She is on gleevec 400mg dly x 4 months. ________________________________ From: Tammy Ferns <tammy@...> Sent: Tue, October 19, 2010 3:53:53 PM Subject: RE: [ ] Colds  Tasigna here. colds are far and few between and don't seem to last. <<Knock on wood!>> J Tammy From: Neal [mailto:nwatson@...] Sent: Tuesday, October 19, 2010 2:43 PM Subject: [ ] Colds Does anyone else have a problem getting over colds? Guest guest
Hi Karine, Unless your Mom has some underlying reason to be given antibiotics without a known infection, I would seriously question the doctor why they were prescribed and ask if they interact with Gleevec. Most antibiotics come with serious risks but if there is a known infection or very high risk for one then those risks can be justified. If on the other hand, no infection exists, I think you would be hard pressed to find a competent doctor who would prescribe them for no reason. For me personally, I seem to get over colds at the same rate I always did and catch the same number of them that I always did. I don't believe that Gleevec has changed my immune system at all and have watched my friends who don't have CML, suffer far longer and more frequently with illnesses than I do. I haven't taken any antibiotics since I was 18 ( I had bronchitis at the time). Take care, Tracey dx Jan 2002 > > My mother has had a cold for about a week now. Guest guest
Wow. I can't believe how many side effects these drugs have. It seems like I am always learning of new ones. Thanks for the info. Hopefully it won't come to that. [ ] Colds Does anyone else have a problem getting over colds? The kids shared their cold with me a few weeks back, and it just keeps lingering. Guest guest
yes but you may not get any. Sometimes people blame every ailment on their CML medication and really they would probably get it even if they did not have CML. I am one of the lucky lucky one that has no side effect on tasigna. I do have hair loss now and then but it always comes back and I do get tired but that may have to do with my age. I am 67. So think positive! Guest guest
Hi Neil, I am soooo over our winter in OZ as I've constantly had an upper respiratory tract infection. I suspect the culprits who keep giving it to me are my grandchildren as they go to daycare and of course catch every bug and I look after them at least once a week. No fever ~ or just very mild, but being an asthmatic, I've had several courses of prednisolone to keep my chest clear so that it doesn't get any worse. I'm on Tasigna and this would be my worse year for colds since I was dx in July 07 - it's also the worse winter we have had too LOL. To help with the runny nose and cough I've been taking a chesty cough mixture and washing my sinuses out with warm saline. At the moment the little treasures have come down with a herpes mouth infection and one has a cold sore on his face, so " touchwood " they don't give it too me! Cheers -- [ ] Colds Does anyone else have a problem getting over colds? The kids shared their cold with me a few weeks back, and it just keeps lingering. Guest guest
Isn't it so strange how everyone is affected differently!!! I just can not get over it. Like I said I am on Tasigna and for 2.5 years I have not had a cold at all!!!!! It is amazing.
