Guest guest
Hi , I remember going for the kindy IEP and dreading it. You need to know that Bethany is entitles to be in the Least Restrictiver Environment in school ( which would be the regular kindergarten) to begin with. Don't let them tell you that they don't " do that at this school " . It is the law. My Micah still can't say all the letters of the alphabet but he is in the regular first grade with a special ed teacher who pushes in to the class for two hours. It would probably be a good idea to ask for a one to one aide for her. If you think she doesn't need one in the classroom then ask for one at lunch time. She sounds like she is doing phenomenal so I wouldn't let them start her anywhere but the regular classroom if that is what you think is best for her. Any questions just e-mail and I'll be happy to answer anything I can. Loree **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
They have told us that NO ONE gets a one to one aide... if they need that much help then they should be in the sped classroom... I've mentioned a 1/2 time aide for her - but because we don't know *when* she'll need help - to have the aide there the whole time... in other words if there is another child that needs an aide - then they could share... does that make sense? How does one " justify " a full time aide? Michele inVA Re: Kindergarten IEP... Hi , I remember going for the kindy IEP and dreading it. Guest guest
IDEA states that each child has the right to be in the Least Restrictive Environment.. LRE. On your IEP it should have a continuum of services starting from the Least Restrictive to the most. One of them.. I think the 2nd is " Reg classroom with support services needed " which would include a one on one aide. I would ask them #1. to put in writing that NO STUDENT GETS a one on one aide.. that puts them out of compliance right there because they are not treating each student as an INDIVIDUAL (remember the I in IEP!). And #2. Ask them to put in writing that they have followed and documented that they have followed the continuum. (That would include a one on one). Hope this helps. Take a highlighted copy of IDEA with you to the meetings. Put everything in writing and date it.. and keep copies. Follow up every phone conversation or " talk " with a letter stating that " just to clarify, this is what I got out of our phone conversation. " And log it all.. dates, times, people. Guest guest
First, sure, sharing might work for both children... it is sometimes better to not have an aide velcroed to one child.. on the other hand, they need to try the least restrictive environment first, with the appropriate modifications, adaptatations and supplementary aides, and/or assistive technology.... I have an aide for since her first year of Kindy.... especially since she was not fully potty trained at the time... basically we said that unless they tried an aide and it did not work, we would not agree to the sped classroom, and if they tried to push it, we would take it to due process and use the stay put option to keep her in the regular classroom.... We did not have an IEP when started school since they did not complete the Evaluation report until like October, so she was in the regular classroom from day 1 --------- Re: Kindergarten IEP...
