Hi ,

Was sitting here reading your post and what instantly popped into my

head was put the cereal in the bottle of breast milk. Start with just

the tiniest bit so that it is barely realized by Isabella. Every couple

of days add a little more. She will be eating cereal like a pro in no

time. I don’t think it has anything to do with the nursing but just new

tastes and textures.

Just a thought.

Good luck!

Nursed baby question-non DS

My little Isabella is almost 6 months old and is the only of my 3 kids

to nurse exclusively for this long. (She does get 2 bottles during the

day while I'm at work, but it is breast milk) Anyway, I can not get her

to eat any food. She takes a couple of bites and then spits it out or

gags. We started with cereal, but even tried adding a little food to

give it some taste. I'm just wondering if this is because she is

nursed?? My others took to cereal at about 4 months and loved it. Does

anyone have any first hand experience with this? Of course having Myah

and all of the speech therapy for texture issues, I get worried that she

MUST have cereal to avoid problems...lol

Thanks,

Spilios

My 2nd baby (nonDS) nursed exclusively for 1 year. We tried at about 6

months and she would occasionally take bites of things, but wouldn't eat

enough to fill her up or anything. The doc told us not to worry and at

about a year, she started eating more and I just started nursing less. I

started giving her juice and water in a cup and at a year, introduced milk

in a cup too. ( she never did take a bottle) She was my lowest weight

toddler, but she is now 16, and eats great! She is probably in the 25th

percentile for her age and height, but eats really healthy food. In fact,

she is probably my most healthy eater of the 5. She doesn't eat junk food

like my oldest and isn't as picky as my 3rd. :) So, I'd say at this point

if Isabella is at a healthy weight, don't panic yet. Just keep offering

other foods and in another month or two, push a little harder and see how

she does. Also, my pediatrician with my youngest who just turned 3 told me

that the American Academy of Pediatrics has changed their

guidelines/recommendations to have moms wait longer before introducing food

anyway. It used to be 4 mos., now I think it is over 6 months. Isabella

must have read the article ;) If you are really worried, talk to your doc.

Just my 2 cents. :)

That's interesting, my eldest is 27 youngest 21 - I was told not to

introduce food ie. Cereal, before 6 months of age - one reason being they

do not need anything else and second, foods introduced too early may cause

other medical problems.

None of my kids, had 'foods' before 6 months of age, except no.1 who was

introduced to all sorts of sweet stuff by my in-laws but that is another

story. At this stage, unless she is hungry or losing weight I wouldn't

really worry, she will let you know when she is ready for that bit extra.

Keep smiling

your little one just may not be ready.. every child, DS or not is different and

now they suggest that babies go at least 6 months before even introducing solids

including cereal to lessen the chances of food allergies and such

Thanks for all of your responses. Isabella is small, but so is everyone else in

my family. :) I told the doc not to worry (after my 2nd was born at 5# 8oz and

18 in-on her due date)we come from leprechauns! lol Isabella was in the 4% at

her 4 1/2 month appt. She looks like she's grown a ton since then so she may

have caught up. We go back to the doc on Feb 18 and I'll probably just wait

until then and not worry too much about it before then. She looks chubby enough

so as long as I'm not missing some special texture window of opportunity, we'll

wait till she's ready. :)

Thanks to you all-AGAIN!

What would I do without all of you???
