Welcome, ! I am Granny, mom to , 34/DS.

We've had the opposite problem with . When she first started solid food

she would eat until she threw up. I've had to drill into her that when she's

full, stop eating. Forget cleaning your plate and all that. She is 4'8 " and

weighs 150 lbs! She is now on the glycemic index diet and is gradually losing

weight.

,

Does he get his thyroid checked yearly? I would rule that out. Maverick always

had his checked but when he hit puberty he got hypo.

We also started him out on protein drinks in the morning and double does of B-12

and it's helped him somewhat.

Hi, all. I’m new the group and hope to get some input from you.

I am a homeschooling (20+ years) mother of nine children ages 28-6. Our #5

child and our #9 child have DS. Our #5 child, , is 13 and since last

August has shown some very odd behavior. He suddenly began withdrawing and

appeared as though he had just woken up from a deep sleep-but he would never

‘perk up’. Gradually he began to not eat unless we sat with him and

insisted. We found that supplementing with protein shakes would bring back

‘the old ’ somewhat but he would easily become quite and withdrawn

again. He acts almost autistic-like. He used to be so engaged and funny. He

would be quick with a joke or involved socially.

There has been no event that preceded this. The only thing we see is he has

been and is growing quickly-normal for a 13 yo boy. It’s not normal for a

13yo boy to have to tell him to eat, though!

We’ve checked his teeth thinking he was having pain and that caused him not

to want to chew-no problems. At times he seems to forget how to chew, even.

He is 5 feet tall and weighs just over 100lbs. Our children tend to run on

the lean side. We have a non DS daughter aged 12 that is also five feet tall

and weighs 70lbs. he’s not on any medication.

Welcome (and et al!). I am , mom to 4 - my youngest is 14 and

has DS and some other issues. Are you located near a Down syndrome clinic?

I would get your son in for an assessment from a doctor who is in the Down

Syndrome Medical Interest Group. You can find a list of DS clinics at

http://www.ds-health.com.

I thought I had seen a video of a young person with DS who developed autism

while in their teens. I can see the young man..I just can't recall where I

saw the video. If it comes to me, I'll let you know. I would get his

thyroid checked, too - if you haven't already done that..but I'd really try

to get him in a DS clinic ASAP.

How is your other child doing? Feel free to post about all nine of your

children - this list is Family Centered and I look forward to hearing more

from you. I do hope you can find out what is going on with . Please

keep us posted.

Have you had your son evaluated by the doctor for possible psych

issues? We had a friend of ours back in Colorado that had an older son

with DS. I say older because our daughter is only 8. I remember her

saying that their son went through this same exact thing. They were

strong Christians as we are and didn't want to do a Medication eval and

see a doctor over it. They got tired of the funny behaviors. Their

son, Timmy, would withdraw, forget to eat or just not eat at all and

started being agressive. They finally got tired of it all and put him

on some type of Psych medication and he is stable and fine now.

According to their doctor, some DS children do this because of the

changes of hormones in their bodies. I'm not a doctor nor a nurse but

just passing along what I remember from our friend's situation. Hope

this helps.

My son had a rough year when he hit puberty and turned 13 and then

even a rougher year when he was 16. He struggles with severe anxiety

and depression. We've gone the psychiatrist route with very little

improvement and are now getting somewhere with a naturopath. I think

sometimes hormones can really affect kids. You might consider getting

him a full medical eval to start.
