God I know how you feel. I get sick to my stomach everytime I hear that

saying. I just wrote a long email to my Brother in laws' girlfriends daughter

the otherday for this same reason. This girl is very intelligent a jr in

collage and to top it off an English major!! I know she loves my son and

doesn't mean any harm by it but the fact that it is so derogatory makes me

sick.

I hope she learns for my letter .

About a year ago I stopped going to the hair stylist (I'll call her S), I've

been going to for over 20 years. She just would not stop saying, " I felt so

retarded " or " that's so retarded " etc. She knew it offended me because for a

long time I would tell her stories about others saying that and how it made

me feel. Well, one day she said to my best friend, who also has a son w/ DS,

" I don't know why she (me) gets so upset, besides I've been saying it all my

life and can't stop now. " Well, of course it got back to me and I stopped

going there. The girl put all the blame on my friend saying she shouldn't

have told me and that it was said in confidence. The girl wrote me a loong

apology and I had written her a 4 page letter explaining WHY I felt that

way. Anyway, another friend of mine who goes there says S feels really bad,

blah, blah, blah..... well 2 weeks ago. My best friend's sister was there

getting her hair done (aunt to the boy w/ DS). S was telling her about how

her and some friends went to a comedy show and how the comedian was " acting

like...ahhh.like...ahhh.<WBR>...person with special needs " . " it was so

now, not only did she NOT learn, but the aunt to my friend's kids relayed

the story because she thought it was SO GREAT that S finally said " special

needs " and not " retard " . She didn't get that they were laughing at someone

pretending to be MR.........

So I guess what I'm saying is, some people just don't " get it " and probably

never

Hi,

That is what I was thinking. I dont think most people use that word to

intentionally hurt someone. It hurts us a lot, but its just a bad word that

people use without much thought. I have heard so many people use it and people

close to me who use it, usually self correct and use another derogatory word

instead.

I believe most people do not mean to be harmful, but words do hurt and there

is only so much we can do to educate the world.

One day amanda was at her youth group with all the 'typical' kids. One of

the girls called one of the other girls from youth group to find out if she

was coming that evening. She said, " Only me and __________ are here. " Never

mentioning that was there too. Like she is invisible. And that is a

kid from our church where we have had all kinds of sensitivity to inclusion

and they have grown up with amanda. I think Di is right- some people just dont

get it. And there is only so much we can do.

I know how you all feel too. It happens now and then, especially when you have

six (counting my nieces) and also have taken care of adults with disabilities.

Not too long ago at Boy Scouts, one of the other Scout leaders turned red in

the face when he was talking about something being flame retardant. He looked

at me and and like he was going to drop over. It was a harmless

mistake and he quickly changed his wording to, " something that won't burn or is

hard to catch fire. "

But some people use the " R " word like it is going out of style and I don't

know if they need to be more sensitive or I need to be less!

I agree, I know people use it as a slang but when the person knows it is

offensive and continues to use it in my presence then I choose to remove

myself from the situation.

Someone emailed saying my bible verse was contradictory to how I reacted.

Let me say, I have forgiven her I just choose not to put myself in a

situation as to be offended and to not have Nic hearing it.
