No way is it your fault! When turned one, his doctor told me right away that he is going to start having tantrums and that it is normal of all children to have them. I was surprised he was telling me this at 12 months, but I am glad he did, as he is 14 and a half months and they are gradually starting. And you know what his dr told me to do? Ignore him, walk away, don't even look at him or say anything...just like siblings will fight for their parent's attention, toddlers have tantrums for attention. My mom used to tell my sister and me that if we wanted to fight, go out in the back yard and duke it out...what happened? We didn't want to fight anymore because no one would be watching us. And something interesting with tantrums, it seems toddlers don't want you to look at them anyway. When you say anything or look at them or try to make them happy, they get even worse. hasn't gotten this bad yet, but he does show a lot of resistence when I tell him no about something. Sometimes I wonder why I thought the newborn months were so hard.
