Guest guest
This is a problem I have always had with SO. Year before last, ran the 50 yard dash. She finished 3rd or 4th, can't remember. The 2 girls that finished ahead of her finished way ahead. They had no physical disability, but did have some cognitive disability. Anyway, having DS and all that accompanies it, there was no level playing field, and I thought that is what SO was supposed to do. Any one else have a thought? Sharon H. Mom to , (16, DS) and , (13) South Carolina www.gsdss.net " Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. " " Life is too short for drama & petty things, so kiss slowly, laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly. " Special Olympics Question Hi Guys, Can anyone tell me why our ds kids are classified T20 ( intellectual disability ) ? G is on the athletics trail again, and is running against kids have no physical disability, hence, they are streeting her. It's like she's running against her 12 yr old brother. Hence, she gives up and says " I'm out of here " Does anyone know why ds hasn't got it's own category ? And if it does, where does it exist ? Cos, Down under isn't in the loop. Thanks, A very frustrated Aussie

Guest guest
Do you think this is a matter of lack of help/volunteers to coach...or something more? > munchkin625@...; > From: Loree5@... > Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2010 19:13:37 -0400 > Subject: Re: Special Olympics question > > I have been disheartened by SO because I can;t find anything for my son to be in. There was an aquatic program not to far away but it is closed and I did not even get a return e-mail from the couch as to when he could possibly get on the team. Finally got the headquarters to call me back and they suggested soccer. We took him there and there were only two small kids. The rest were young adults high school age and older. That wasn't appropriate for a nine year old who looks 4. Askeed about horseback riding and it is done through a lottery system and only so many kids get in and that is in the spring. All the programs seem to be in the next county over and I cannot ride and hour each way 2 to 3 times a week for practices. I have my 88 year old mom living with me and also my other son is in high school sports. We just signed him up for a school wide bowling league and he is having fun . But I have really had my eyes opened with SO here. > > Loree > > > Special Olympics question > > > I ran into something disturbing and wanted to see if this happens everywhere. > > Nic just started SO gymnastics. Guest guest
I'm not taking up for them or anything. But I did want you to know that SO is a wonderful program BUT it's getting harder and harder to run it. IT's almost, no I think it is, a full time job. There is so much paperwork, so much time spent on the phone begging for volunteers, money, etc. (EVERYONE says they will help you, but when it comes time to do it, you'll find just a few that will.) People love to be huggers at an event, but don't have time no matter how well intentioned, to spend hours becoming a coach. IT's expensive to pay for buses to events, hotel rooms, etc. Alot of time is spent fundraising. The horseback riding in our area is also by lottery. There just aren't enough horses and trainers for all the kids that would benefit from it. So I guess the point of my soapbox vent is that if people don't call you right back, etc. it might be because they are overwhelmed. I still think it is rude, but it doesn't surprise me. Don't mean to offend people that have a well run program, but if you have it, you are very lucky. Oh and if the county director doesn't answer you, go straight to the state director. I bet that would get things moving. He/She should be on the website.
