Guest guest
Dana Hi! I am sorry to hear that isnt liking his new helmet. Mya adjusted well from the very beginning. How old is ? Mya never fought it at all. And I was very concerned about disrupting sleep as well. Mya is an excellent sleeper. She sleeps from 8 pm till 930 am every night. SHe did this before her DOC band and she still does it now. Mya was sweating terribly at first and then after a couple of days she seemed to adjust her body temperature and the sweating had went away but now that the temp has been in the 80s and 90s here the sweating has starting A LOT! I have to take off her band several times a day to wipe it out and dry off her head. I am hoping maybe her body will adjust a little better to the heat but I really just dont know. SHe has gotten a rash on her forehead that the orthotist said is from her sweating so badly. They put moleskin in that spot and told me to use hydrocortisone cream but theres still a big red spot there. Good luck with getting to keep his helmet on. Keep us posted on how things are going with him. Christi mom to MYa (DOC band 3/6/02) > Hi all, > Well, we have 's helmet. Guest guest
Dana: What a bummer! I will tell you it will get better! It is very rare for baby's not to tolerate helmets at all. Some babies take longer to get used to them than others. Give him a few days . I'll try to answer your other questions below: 1) Will the helmet disrupt his sleep? Right now he sleeps from 8pm - > 7am. I can't tell you how much I want this to continue MOST babies sleep just fine with their helmet/band. Of course with not tolerating his helmet at all right now, he could have a harder time sleeping in it. He should get used to it & hopefully SOON! > > 2) He's sweating like a pig. How often should I take it off and > wipe him down? He just seems so overheated. Are you taking his helmet off on an hourly basis already to check for red spots? With most new bands for the first week or so the orthotist recommends an hour on hour off schedule. I would wipe him down probably every hour of so. > > 3) When will the sweating stop? The sweating will greatly diminish as 's body temperature adjusts to wearing that hunk of plastic on top of his head. Usually within a week or maybe 2 the child adjusts & the sweating will get a lot better. Is it hot there in Ont. too? (It's VERY hot across the US right now). The heat of course will only make it worse. Maybe dress a little lighter too. > That's great to hear about the australia orthotist. We've had a few Aussie members - they'd be thrilled with more progress made in their area. Well I have my fingers crossed hoping adjusts soon. Please keep us updated & GOOD LUCK Debbie Abby's mom DOCgrad MI
Guest guest
Dana, I'm so glad to hear that got his helmet...yay!! The sweating usually decreases after about 2 or 3 weeks, as the body temperature adjusts to having the helmet on. Until then, dress him in lighter clothing. The twins never really had a problem sleeping in their bands after the first night, they just needed to get used to it. Each kid is different, but on the most part, it usually takes a few weeks for the child to get completely used to the helmet. Good luck Dana, and be sure to let us know how does. On another topic, those 'Wiggles' crack me up. They are so hyper, I swear they are going to hurt themselves!! ) Niki Kaylie & Danny (STAR grads) Phila., PA > Hi all, > Well, we have 's helmet. Hang in there Dana, especially with the tort- its hard work but keep the faith- will do just fine (you'll be exhausted when its all said and done, but he'll do great and that will be such a reward!). Guest guest
Thanks Christi, is doing a little better today. We've managed to keep the helemt on 3 hours so far today (which is great improvement from 2 1/2 hours yesterday..the whole day). When we start overnights (maybe tomorrow night), things should improve. Right now he is napping well in the helemt which is GREAT! I've noticed though that he is not moving around during his naps. Usually I put him down and he could be upside down when he's finished. This worries me as he is often changes position alot at night too. He just looks so sad with it on..it breaks my heart. It' s like he has a whole new personality. As soon as I take it off, he smiles and plays again. Thanks for your concern. I'll keep everyone posted.
