Guest guest
Hi and welcome. I would recommend checking out the bookmarks section of our homepage. There are links there to all kinds of research type articles that you might want to check out. I found all sorts of articles when I prepared my appeal letters when battling with my insurance company for coverage. My neuro was also a very strong believer in the benefits and necessity of banding therapy for babies with positional plagio. I don't think there are any band/helmet makers out there that do not recommend 23 hours a day in the band/helmet. Babies are constantly growing and the best way to maximize that growth is to have the helmet on most all of the time. I know that started kind of late with her helmet and we did not get 100% correction. We are very happy with the way she looks, but the assymetries that remained are still with her today. They are minor, but her head has not continued to correct on its own. Unfortunately peds and even specialists are VERY uninformed as a rule about plagio and the long term effects that could result. Some of the conditions that my neuro felt could result from untreated plagio were TMJ, vision problems, speech and language delays, developmental delays and more. That is not to say that these things WILL happen, just that they could. Hope this helps! I know how difficult this kind of decision is, but you are sure to make just the right one for your son. Guest guest
Hi and Welcome to the group! As you are just starting out, you will find that so many of us have come up against Doctors telling us the round out theory. My ped thought that my son's misalignment of his ears was an optical illusion due to the tilting caused from torticollis, and that the flattening would " pop out " on its own. She also showed me that she too, had the smaller eye and that no one was perfect. Thankfully, the information I received online pushed us more towards the DOC band. wore it for 3 months and we received about 95% correction. His ears are aligned, his smaller eye is no longer smaller, and the puffier cheek seems gone because his noticeable asymmetry found in looking in a mirror is no longer there. I went against her advice and now she is all the rave about how great his head looks and that we made the best decision for us. I don't have answers about studies. But, if you compare my results, with that of my good friend, whose child had/has severe brachyocephaly (total flat back), I can tell you that his head has not rounded out, at all, and he is going to be 2 on May 10. They have serious regrets. It is a very personal decision to band, and you have to way all the pros and cons for your own situation. It was an exhausting decision to make, looking back, it seemed so drastic, now its so good to say we have no regrets. Really educate yourself because many Docs will not and give the impression that they know all. Make the ultimate decision yourselves, and you will not have any regrets because you will have put all your effort into knowing what your best plan is/was. Good luck to you all and please keep us posted! ' Mom
