Lye - Flake vs. Bead

I'm planning to go pick up some lye at the chemical supply place that

Lizz and Jeanine gave me the lead on. They emailed me with a quote and

told me it is flake lye. I've always used the beads (crystals) so I'm

wondering if there's any great difference. I'd hate to buy 100 lbs. of

flakes and then not like working with it. Anybody? Also, I've never

bought from a chemical supply business before. They acted like I could

just show up whenever. Is that really how it works? You don't have to

place an order, just stop in and buy like a store? I'll probably call

them tomorrow just to be sure before I drive up there Friday afternoon

but thought someone could fill me in. Thanks!

Katy, I've never used flake lye before but I do remember a conversation once

in one of my groups about it vs granulated lye. The flake lye apparently

didnt " jump around " when you were trying to work with it, but other than

that it was same. Just as long as your measuring it by weight and not

volume.

Yeah, I measure by weight. If it's easier to work with then I'll be

thrilled. Thanks Shaye!

Hi Katy, Never used the flakes, so I don't know the comparison.

Maybe they aren't as staticy. I use the beads and always wipe the

outside of my container with a dryer sheet so the crystals don't hop

around.

I do purchase from a chemical supply company here in Albany---

crystals ($30 for 50 lbs.), and they don't require pre order, but

they do have specific hours for pick up---I think 10am to 2pm. If

you haven't asked already, make sure the place you are going to is

available for pick up at the time you will be there. They used to

just write up a receipt. Now they are required to have you complete

a simple form. Our place is very " soaper friendly " .

Thanks ! I went there this afternoon but called ahead so they were

ready for me. I think they had the bead lye there too so I'm wondering

if the guy quoted me on the flake because it was more expensive or

something. I never asked about the bead. I paid $1 a lb. for the flake.

Oh well. At least I've got it now and can soap like crazy this weekend!

I've been anxious to get back at it! Thanks again!
