This should have nothing to do with it (that he is in a private day school)> You are actually saving the school money by his not attending the school program. What we did is this. Our son attended a half day pre-school and we had his speech therapist, OT, Pt and we had a consultant teacher, do all of his services at the pre-schoool so that there was someone there with him. They cannot deny the services he is entitled to and if he needs an aide he is entitled to that also. From 3 to 21 the school is responsible for what he needs. I would talk to an advocate. **************One site has it all. Your email accounts, your social networks, and the things you love. Guest guest
Not sure about preschool, but at school age, it all depends on who decided to go with a private placement and the surrounding circumstances. Generally, if parents, then no aide; if IEP team-and appropriateness team decision-yes aide. Will this be his last year of preschool? Judi _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of newmearth Sent: Monday, November 24, 2008 12:50 AM Subject: IEP meeting rejected request for an aide for our son Our son with DS is four years old and is attending a private preschool. However, on his second day at school the director (in support of the teacher) told us he needed an aide to be in the classroom... so at our IEP meeting we requested an aide but we were denied because our son is in a private preschool and not the local " special day program. " (We did, however, get speech therapy for him twice a week at the IEP.) Any advice for us? We are currently paying for his aide (plus his tuition!) so he can stay in his classroom (he was in the toddler class for ten months prior and did very well and did not need an aide). And the school is very supportive of our son and want him there and feel he is a very important part of the school community, as do we (and our son loves his class!). Should we get legal advice or is this standard--no aides for private preschool disabled students. I read IDEA, et al., but am still not clear regarding this issue and the law. Thank you for responding... and it has been a while since we posted. LN mom to 9/
