Does he have a positive behavioral support plan at school to address the

behaviors?

I don't know about studies, but there do seem to be changes in many children

with ds that I know/ know of around puberty. Same as children without ds.

My understanding was that Ritalin, etc. are stimulants that only have a

benefit to children with ADHD/ ADD. Does your child have a dx of ADHD/ ADD

in addition to ds?

Because the drugs mentioned are stimulants, the child's cardiac status would

be relevant, along with any other existing medical concerns.

I'd ask to see the studies.

Subject: Does any one have any comments? Good or bad?

My son is 10 and will be 11 in February. He started junior high this year

and he has had a very hard time.

A lot has happened - there was no communicating between the 4th and 5th

grade teachers b4 school started and the 4th grade teacher passed away in

October

.. My son was suspended 1 day and everyday is a laundry list of behavior

issues.

I spoke with the pediatitrison yesterday and she told me to think about

adderall or ritalin. She said there have been studies ( that she has done

also )

that in kids with DS it shows a night and day difference in behavior during

puberty. Does anyone have any 1st hand knowledge of this ? I really hate

the idea of " medicating " him but also want him to get the most out of

school

that he can.

thanks

I would make sure that there is a positive behavior support program in place...

as Judi mentioned.

ALL children go through changes during puberty, I personally have not heard of

putting a child with or without DS on stimulants during puberty, but I'm not a

medical professional. I would be doing a lot of reading about it if I were

going to consider it.

My choice would be to get them going on an ABC chart..... writing down the

incidents in ABC order with help show what the focus needs to be.

I would also make sure that they are sending home a list of POSITIVE things that

he is doing? If they don't, I would bluntly write a note and say... please tell

me areas that is successful in. Please document these also.

You may just have to teach THEM to focus on his successes and not on what he is

doing wrong... go back to the basics.

Just my opinion.. and we all know how I push the positive, positive, positive!

LOL.

Um, just a thought - is the behaviour related to him trying to tell you he

is older and can do more than you think he is capable of? Sometimes our

kids get very frustrated with us, the overprotective adult who doesn't know

when to let go - perhaps try and figure out the why first. Also, schools

can be a big pain as well, expecting the disabled student to be 100% text

book perfect all the time - but make allowances for others as kids will be

kids.

I have never been in a position regarding the need for drugs for my kids,

thus will refrain to comment on that.

Mmmh, here is just my comment. Changes during puperty happen with all kids.

With or without DS. And believe me, I know what I'm talking about.

(11, DS) starts to do those " Alpha-Dog " -things. He wants to be the master of

all and he starts activities he never ever done before. At night he cannot

sleep (or he do not want to sleep) and wakes up me and his sisters, too. He

is often very agressive and believe me he wasn't agressive ever! Before

medicate him with Ritalin I would try every other possibility. But if there

would be no other way to keep him in school, I think I would do it! Good

luck!

Nic has been medicated for ADHD since first grade. He is 11 now will be 12

3/1. We have seen much improvement in his behavior. On weekends we usually

don't medicate unless we are attending a social event where his behavior

needs to be under control.

We tried Stattera (a non-stimulant) and it made him extremely violent. I

know of 2 other children who had the same reaction to Stattera(2 others were

non-DS)

So if you do decide to medicate I would not try that. In addition, Strattera

has to be built up in the system...therefore when you stop it, the child

must be weaned off which only prolonged the negative behaviors.

Nic is on dextroamphetimine (a stim like Ritalin, but not Ritalin.)
