This is outrageous! That is absolutely your right to get a referral to a specialist. Sorry I can't help you with any names in the Detroit area, I hope other members will be able to chime in with some good names for you. If that doesn't pan out, I would first demand that the ped give you that referral and if they still don't budge, I would threaten legal action (a couple won a lawsuit recently against a Doctor because they failed to get treatment as asked in a timely manner). If you can't get to another Doctor for insurance reasons or just lack of contact names, don't let your ped off the hook so easy- he is working for you after all! Please keep us posted and let us know how it turns out!! Good luck- sending lots of luck your way to get things going!

Need Help In Detroit Michigan Area

Our ped. referred us to a Dr. Ian . He is a craniofacial surgeon affiliated with Providence Hospital in Southfield MI right outside of Detroit. We are in southeast MI and ended up seeing a doctor in Toledo who was closer for us, so I cannot personally recommend him. However, I do know that he was trained at the Mayo clinic, and has recommended babies for banding in the past. Sounds like you might have to switch peds. to get a referral, good luck.

Our son has some flattening on the left side of his head and we have noticed that his ears are misaligned. Unfortunately we are in the HAP HMO here in the Detroit area and his PCP's will not refer us to a specialist nor will they will prescribe a band for him. They have said that nobody's head is perfect, and that it will correct itself for the most part, as he gets older. He is 4 months old now and we want doctors who are familiar with band technology to look at him.We do not agree with his pediatricians, and are interested in names and locations of any doctors who work with band technology in the Detroit Michigan area. Any suggestions and help would be appreciated. For more plagio info

, the UofM health system works with helmets. There is a craniofacial clinic (within the pediatric plastic surgery dept) at U of M Motts Hospital in Ann Arbor that will diagnose plagio and prescribe a locally made helmet (once the appt. is made, they will cast for the helmet the same day the diagnosis is made, and helmet arrives in 2 weeks). Phone number is (734)763-8063. I have also seen one STARband used by a patient there, and we got a prescription for a DOCband there (but it was a struggle, and the nearest CT clinic is Cleveland). I don't think you have to have a referral to see them, but if you do the pediatricians within the U of M Health System will refer you to them. Go to http://www.med.umich.edu to search for a pediatrician near you and you can also look up info on the craniofacial clinic. Also, our pediatrician prescribed the DOCband (needed a 2nd helmet) without needing to go to the craniofacial clinic, so you might just get the prescription that way. Children's Hospital in Detroit will also prescribe the U of M made helmet. Good luck to you.

Debbie,

Hi, I'm Kayla's mom. Kayla is 2 months old and we are working with repositioning. We have an appt. at UofM on June 27th if Kayla needs it. Debbie do you know anything about their locally made helmet? If Kayla should need a helmet any information you could provide will help us decide what to do. We have MCare and are part of the UofM Health System. I have no complaints. When I called our insurance company they said they cover one model. If Kayla get this far hopefully we will be covered.
