Holly,

Well one of the hardest parts is now behind you! The fitting and actually

wearing the band is not nearly as hard as the casting! Sounds like

handled it as well as can be expected and recovered from the experience

really well - good for him! It's great that Dad could be there to help - it

is most helpful to have another couple of hands available.

Let us know when the fitting is scheduled!

Holly,

I'm so glad that the casting is over for and he was a trooper for as long as he could be!! Now onto a rounder noggin :o) But its important that you treat that tight neck muscle with stretches and massage, as this may be the underlying reason for the plagio in the first place.

My son was dx with torticollis at 2 months, which further progressed the plagio that started inutero. With favoring one side and the flattening of one side of the back of the head, this sound very indicative of torticollis, which essentially is, a tight neck muscle. Torticollis can be caused by spinal fusion or hip displasia, but it is more common to have muscular tort (tight neck muscle) that is very treatable with physical therapy. I think that some parents are not given this term either because the pt/Doc only knows of tort as a bony problem and not muscular, or they just feel the term in and of itself will scare parents. Also, there are varying degrees of tort, some children tilt their head, others do not- some have range of motion issues (cannot turn head completely to one side) and others do not- so there are many different types of tort as well as different causes and treatments. I share this with you so that you can find a wealth of info on tort and treat this condition as such, without proper treatment, that tight neck muscle can pull down the facial features, as well as pull up the upper and lower torso to meet it. You will find so much more info on tort than you ever will for tight neck muscles on the web! Please check into the group www.torticolliskids for more tips and info on how to treat a tight neck muscle. I will also attach a few links to help you understand tort as well as work on it through exercise techniques. Good luck and if I can help you in anyway, please feel free to contact me.
