Guest guest
not quite, Ellen...if a substance does not appear on the approved list of cosmetic colour additives, then you are not permitted to use it as a colour additive. a lot of companies get around this by using various herbs (that are not on the banned or 'delisted' lists) and claiming that the colour is incidental, but I wouldn't think that would work with alkanet. First, because it's only use is as a colour additive, second, as I understand things, it USED TO BE on the approved list and was permanently DELISTED. In other words, it is mentioned in the FDA literature on colour additives. > Regarding Alkanet, I don't believe it's -banned- by the FDA, it's just not > included on the approved list. The current list of colrants approved by the FDA for use in cosmetics sold in the US can be found at: http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/opa-col2.html Also, it should be noted that the FDA's, Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA) Investigations Operations Manual states: http://www.fda.gov/ora/inspect_ref/iom/APPENDICES/appA9.html " The following colors, previously commonly used, are no longer authorized for use: Alkanet (Alkane) Ferrous sulfate " (others ommited for brevity) Maurice _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Guest guest
Hi Maurice! Thanks for clarifying that. I knew that it had been removed but didn't realize that also meant it was 'banned'... I guess 'no longer authorized for use' is the same as banned. Can you tell us why it was? Is it dangerous? And would it be okay to use it in soap, but not cosmetics? TIA, Ellen~ > >From: Ellen~ <wings@v...> > >Date: Tue, 6 Feb 2001 09:50:51 -0500 (EST) > > > >Regarding Alkanet, I don't believe it's -banned- by the FDA, it's just not included on the approved list.
