Guest guest
Hello and welcome to the group! Adjusting to the stares and comments was one of the hardest parts for me. No mom wants to think that anyone could be thinking anything negative about their baby!!!! I tried to ignore as best I could, but if the " starer " was in speaking distance I would usually smile at them and say, " She's cute isn't she? " Then they would either agree and walk off or agree and strike up a conversation. What strength rubbing alcohal are you using? You can get 90 something % if you ask your pharmacist. Regular shelf rubbing alcohal is 70 something percent. Also, you might use a really good smelling shampoo like L'oreal Kids Shampoo (we like watermelon) and leave it on throughout the entire bath. Good luck and I hope you will share some more of your story with us. Marci (mom to ) Oklahoma
Guest guest
Marci- Thanks for the advice. I will try the shampoo and I didn't know that about the rubbing alcohol. So Ian seems to be doing ok with the band not great. He is rather fussy, but the weather has been in the upper 90's so that isn't helping the situation. We are going to see our nuersurgeon next Wednesday who is not real confident the band is going to work since he has severe plagio. So we are looking forward to that. The worst part of this whole ordeal is we have to go to Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA which is a 2.5 hour drive from our home in Sacramento. The boys have done well, but it makes for a long trip when we seem to be going at least once a week, however, on the flip side I would go everyday if necessary to fix this problem. Talk to you soon, thank again for the advice -Ian & Sacramento, CA > Hello and welcome to the group! Adjusting to the stares and comments was one > of the hardest parts for me. Guest guest
Oh , I wish I were going to Palo Alto. I grew up about 10 minutes from there, and the hotter it gets in Texas, the more I miss the mild weather in the Bay Area. I know, this has nothing to do with plagio and bands, I'm just sentimental... Guest guest
This is the first time I've been on this message board, and it is comforting to find someone else who has to travel from Sacramento to Sanford. my son just got his Star Band helmet... his second helmet because somehow the first was created wrong by the manufacturer. I didn't even find out until I called up to explain that the helmet didn't look like it was fitting right. Talk about a frustration! Just when started to eat right again, he had to stop wearing the wrong helmet and wait another week before he got the new one. Now he has to get used to it all over again. It seems like every trip down to Palo Alto takes longer. We are also going down almost every week... This time it took 4 hours to get there... traffic was a bear! Our appointment was at 9:00am... didn't get there until 10:00am... didn't get home until 4:30pm... so I know what you are going through. I would go down every day as well to see 's head round out. is 7 months old and refuses to sleep with his helmet on. He cries like he is being tortured...Do you have any tricks to help get him to sleep with it on? Francine (mom to ) Sacramento, CA > Marci- > Thanks for the advice. Guest guest
Hi Francine & welcome to our group: I am so sorry to hear isn't sleeping with his band on. I don't ever remember so many babies refusing to sleep with their bands on as what I've heard about just this week alone (3). How frustrating. There was a good tip in here the other day, to try to slip the band back on 's head once he is asleep. I dunno if he's a light sleeper & that would wake him, but maybe once he's asleep he wouldn't realize the band was on his head & it wouldn't disrupt him???? It's worth a shot! I dont' have any other helpful tips though. I know what you're saying about long trips for the band. I also had about 4 hr one way drives back & forth to get my daughter's DOCband. Thankfully though, we only went bi-weekly cuz Abby was a bit older. But I look back now & am thrilled we did it. Like you said, it's worth every screaming car drive for a rounder head!! Sorry to hear the 1st band didn't fit right. I am happy though to hear the problem was resolved quickly & rec'd a new band promptly. Good luck with the sleep problems. Welcome again to the group. We look forward to getting to know you in the coming mos of 's rounding head. Debbie Abby's mom DOCGrad MI > > Marci- > > Thanks for the advice. Guest guest
Debbie, Thank you for the wonderful tip to try. I didn't think about putting the Star Band on while was asleep. He usually sleeps soundly at night, so it may be the trick we were looking for. We'll see. The difficult part is that he just started to turn on his side to sleep. He may end up waking himself up trying to turn... It's definately worth a try! I'll let you know. How long did Abby need to wear the Doc Band? How old was she when she started wearing it? Guest guest
, We are seeing Dr. Pang (specialist) in Sac w/ Kaiser. will see him for the second time beginning of July. His reg Dr. is Dr. Sullivan. Both Dr's thought that repositioning would work for and initially did not want to do anything to help correct it before it got worse. My husband and I discovered the flat spot at 1 month. ( was born 10/31/01 - Holloween) had the preference since he was born to lay with his head turned to the right when he slept. They ruled out tight neck muscles due to him being able to fully turn his head both directions when he was upright. I can't believe it took until now for something to be done. I sure hope it works... Bob explained that they usually shoot for 60% better (in regards to head shape). He said that the probability of it being perfectly back to the way it was before was not that great. The flat spot now has shifted his right ear, making it higher than the left... at this point in time, I want him to look normal and not be made fun of when he gets older by other kids... (sorry for going on and on....it's just the first time I've really been able to talk to others who are going through the same thing as I am...) Guest guest
How long did Abby need to wear the Doc Band? How old was she when she started wearing it? Francine: Abby began her DOCband at age 11.5 mos.. She wore one band for 4.5 most time with very good improvement, esp. for an " older " baby. Abby's plagio was severe too so I am thrilled with her improvement! IT's hard to beleive she's been a graduate for almost a year already! Good luck getting to sleep with his band on tonite....let us know how it goes. Debbie Abby's mom 3/1/00 DOCgrad 2/16/01-6/22/01 MI

Guest guest
Hi Francine and welcome! Sorry to hear of the sleeping problems - it seems we've had a rash of that lately. Normally it is very uncommon for babies to have trouble sleeping in their bands. I wish I had some great advice, but unfortunately I don't. (my dd) wore a helmet and never cared a bit about it. Do you feel like the band is fitting properly now? Best wishes, Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
Guest guest
Francine I am so sorry to hear of 's mishap with the helmet-how frustrating for you and for him! When he lays down in the helmet is it rubbing him or pressing that would make him so miserable. We used to slip 's band on him after he fell asleep and that worked pretty well. Although we didn't have trouble with him sleeping in it-we would have to do that when it wasn't dry yet and he had already fallen asleep. We have had a few moms lately with sleep problems. Hope they have some suggestions for you. Does he sleep on his back or belly? Does he move a lot? We used angel flight to travel for our treatments- it might be something you could look into if the drive is really rough! beck Mom to doc grad
