OMG Marci :(

Poor little . Abby has thankfully never had croup, but she does

get very bad bad coughs from time to time. She was also put on oral

steroids last May they did help. I am very impressed tolerated

the breathing treatment (nebulizer?) so well!!! You should be very

proud. We TRIED giving Abby treatments last year, I stress the word

TRIED....who knew a p.o.'d one year old could be sooooo strong!

I hope she gets better & sleeps ok thru the night. Let us know.

if the poor baby could not get a deep breath or any kind of breath

for that matter. She has a cough like a barking seal and curretly has

virtually no voice. I kept thinking last night - I need to take her

to the ER, but I resisted because I didn't want to be a paranoid mom.

I took her to the ped this am and they diagnosed croup. She had a

breathing treatment there in the office and did GREAT with it! Ped

gave her an oral steroid and told us to keep the humidifier going 24

hours a day. Question - Anyone else have a baby who has had croup?

Quite frankly the Fact Sheet they gave me about it scared the heck

out of me. How serious is it? Ped said if it got bad in the night

(which apparently is when it gets the worst) I should go to the ER

right away. Anyone ever taken their baby to the ER with croup? I hope

this all makes sense - I am operating on ZERO sleep. Help!

Marci -

We have dealt with croup a few times. Our cases have always been in

the winter, so it was easy to take the kids outside. The cold air

stopped the stridor immediately.

Dane had croup in March, I believe. He was barking during the day.

He was put on an oral steriod and it cleared up within 24 hours.

Olivia has only had stridor (barking) at night, so we have always

escaped it with her.

You can go into the bathroom and turn the water on hot to create

a " sauna " effect. Remember when Debra Winger did that on Terms of

Endearment?! Also open the freezer door and put 's head near

there (sounds bizarre, but works). I bet you won't have to go to

the ER. Just know you may be in for again tonight. You can

probably control it at home.

The steriods worked wonders last time. I also was giving Dane

benedryl.

Good luck. Here's to a quiet evening.

croup so I can't offer any advice. I imagine hearing that kind of

Debbie,

I'm hoping the oral steroids will work wonders. I completely described the

nebulizer before they brought it in and role-played it with her first. She tried

really hard to do it just right for mommy! So sweet!!!! It's so much easier now

because I can explain beforehand and she understands. I told her the ped

wouldn't put a stick in her mouth if she would open up and say Ah so she did!

LOL!

Thanks,

Marci

" Anyone ever taken their baby to the ER with croup? "

Okay...I'm one of those paranoid moms...lol. I took to emergency two

weeks ago with Croup. I'm glad I did. They gave him the oral steroid too,

and told me that if he did have a good coughing fit to bundle him up warm

and take him into the car for a drive with the windows open. At that time

it was still fairly cool here in Calgary, and they said the cool fresh air

is one of the best things for it. They also said to put the humidifier on

at home. I like aromatherapy, so I put tea tree oil in the humidifier to

help with the virus. They also told me that the adult version of croup is

laryngitis. Not sure if this helps any, but I thought I'd chime in anyway.

:) Hope is feeling better soon!

I'll tell ya - the coughing is one thing. The fact that it truly sounded like

she could not breath scared the you-know-what out of me!! My mom says she is

doing a little better now, but seems to be REALLY wired! Does anyone think that

could something to do with the steroids?

Yes it probably is the stearoids. Sara was on stearoids (both oral and through a nebulizer) back in January for an RSV-like illness and she didn't sleep well until she got off them. It sure sped up the recovery though, so definitely worth it. Get well soon.
