Guest guest
Hi and welcome! I'm glad you were able to get in touch with Carol - she is quite wonderful and an outstanding resource. My daughter wore a locally made helmet and it did help with facial assymetry and ear misalignment. I'm not sure why your specialist would tell you that bands/helmets would not help with that! If you decide to go with the band I doubt you will ever be sorry. Good luck with your decision. I know it is not an easy one. Guest guest
Taime, I can vouch for the DOC band helping facial assymetry - it fixed it completely for both of my twins! Gail, Sam and Sara's mom, DOC grads I'm new and need advise! I'm sorry this is so long. Hi, I guess I'll start but giving everybody my daughters back ground. When she was born she was put in the NICU because she had breathing problems and was put on a respirator. They always laid her on her right side. (I only noticed that when I went back and looked at all the pics I took of her when she was in there)About a month after she came home I noticed that her head was always tilted in the same position. I took her to the doc who said "it's not what you think it is". I took her to another doc who said"it's not the condition that you think it is". I knew that something wasn't right, the right side of her head was getting flatter by the day or so it seemed. I took her to another doctor who FINALLY said she had torticollis. She only had 15-20% range of motion when she started PT. She went to PT twice a week for 3 months(We did ALOT of streching excecises at home and repositioning) and now has 100% range of motion. Her head has rounded out some since the PT. But it's still somewhat flat behind her right ear, it's more noticable when her hair is wet. Her ears are misaligned, her right ear is more forward then her left and at times her right eye is bigger then her left. Her forehead bulges too.The last time (9mth well baby) she had her head measured and she was in the 91st percentile. Her pedy ordered a CT scan and referred me to a neurosurgeon. Craino and fluid were both ruled out. The ns I took her too said her head is perfect and not to worry about the facial asymmetry, everybody has it. He was totally anti-treatment.He told me about a study that was done on a group of kids, all with plagio. Half of them were treated with helmets and the other half weren't, 6 months later the helmet kids had rounder heads. They went back 4 1/2 years later and the helmet kids heads were flat again. So I took her for a second opinion yesterday to a plagio friendly doctor who told me that "there is a mild-moderate degree of right occipital flattening with a mild-moderate degree of shearing of the right ear". But that she didn't need a helmet because it has rounded out since the tort was resolved. I told him that I'm not really all that concerned about her head I'm more concerned about the facial asymmetry. He said a helmet wouldn't help with the facial asymmetry. (He uses Hanger) I knew from my research of the doc band and my reading of all your posts that it does correct facial asymmetry. I emailed Carol from CT (wow what a great lady, very helpful.)with a picture of my daughter attached. I called her and she said from the picture it looks like my daughter would be a canidate for the doc band. I have an appointment with CT on Thursday the 13th for a consult. I have to go to NJ and I live in NY, on Long Island) My question to all of you is: Did banding your children really help the facial asymmetry? I'd hate to have to travel to NJ twice a month with 5 kids, if it's not going to help the facial asymmetry. If it will correct the facial asymmetry I'd be willing to drive there everyday if need be. is already 10 months old. I'm going to attach a picture of her. She just got done eating she was sitting so still that I just snapped a pic, dirty face and all.You can really see the facial asymmetry in this pic. Please let me know if you can see it and if so would you consider the doc band if she were your child. I'm sorry this is soooo long. Thank you for all your help, ____________________________________________________ IncrediMail - Email has finally evolved - Click Here For more plagio info
Guest guest
Hi My second son Dylan started the DOCband at 8 months and he was classed as severe. The Ped told me that with normal growth and without the DOCband Dylan would be " grossly deformed " (quite shocking to be told that but he was being honest). Dylan is in his second DOCband and i knew he would have to have 2 from the start. The first band has rounded his head nicely and corrected his facial assymetry. The second band is concentrating on the forehead bossing and ear misalignment. Dylan has had good correction i thank god that the DOCband was invented. I wish you lots of luck and keep us all posted. Kind wishes Kerry - Marcus (3) Dylan in second DOCband (16months) Calgary,AB >From: Taime <taime@...> >Reply-Plagiocephaly >Plagiocephaly >Subject: I'm new and need advise! Guest guest
, is so beautiful!!! I love those eyes!!! I do notice VERY minor asymmetry going on- she looks very much like my son did, although his was much more noticeable to me, and he wore the DOC band for 3 months (age 5 months to 8 months), which DID correct the misaligned ears, smaller eye, more protruding cheek and flatness of the right back (also minor bossing of the forehead). He also had tort and was in agressive pt from 3 months to 9 months- and we still do passive exercises and massage to keep it at bay. I have heard many moms post that the DOC band fixed all asymmetry problems, if not altogether, than enough to make a difference. If CT says that she is a candidate, and you feel strongly enough about her asymmetry being noticeable, I would say go for the DOC Band. I am not sure about the study that was done that your Doc mentioned, but I do know that several moms have stated that their children did not round out over time, as Doctors said they would. The ear misalignment and smaller eye was our biggest concern, and if you look at her in the mirror, it is probably even more noticeable there. This is how I knew the DOC band was working, because what was once so apparent in the mirror of his face being " off " - no longer looked that way no matter how I scrutinized it! It's a hard decision to band when you get conflicting points of view, and the problem is such that it may be so noticeable to you and just not others, partly because your just so much more aware of it. It's a decision you'll have to make by weighing the pros and cons, but I would just tell you that the longer you wait, the less chance you will have for great correction. I have never regretted our decision, just very thankful that the DOC band was able to align his ears (albeit one is always going to be smaller than the other)- I am forever checking this, and they are very aligned now, the eyes now appear to be the same size, and the protruding cheek is no longer. Good luck on your decision and please keep us posted on what you decide! ' Mom
Guest guest
Hi, I'd like to thank everybody that replied to my post. You all have been a very big help. I have an appointment with CT in NJ next Thursday and what ever they think is best is what I'm going to do. My boys 6 and 8 are already very competitive. (Grrrrr) So I know my girls are going to be too. Not to sound like I'm bragging, but my 3 year old is very beautiful, that is another reason I want to try and get 's facial asymmetry corrected. I know how cruel kids can be and I don't think it would be fair to , if I didn't at least try one more time. She is in for some really tough competition. She is also developmentally delayed, I had early intervention here yesterday and they say that with her gross motor skills they feel that is at a 6/12 mo level. My 6 yo is pretty small for his age and my 8 yo is constantly ribbing him about it. I can't even begin to imagine how much my 3 yo would bust chops about 's face if it gets worse, when they are older. I really don't know where all the competitiveness comes from. Neither myself or their father are competitive people. I'm just going to pray a lot and hope that CT can help her. I'll be sure to post and let you all know how she makes out on Thursday. Thank you so much, ____________________________________________________ IncrediMail - Email has finally evolved - Click Here
