Guest guest
, Sorry to hear you had a bumpy night!!! Poor Mackenzie- and poor tired mom and Dad too! I looked at the pics (too cute!), and I think you said the left eye looks swollen, but the right eye concerned me more. I think its a little close to the right eye, and I would ask them to trim off a little of the edge- its so close that a little shaving shouldn't be a hassle- usually they don't like to take off too much- but just a touch for comfort should help! I thought that the left ear cut out was a little close to the ear in the front as well- but this is really normal and if you look inside of the band in that area, it shouldn't really be even resting on the ear (but maybe this needs adjustment in correlation with the swollen eye?). I had to ask to trim around his ear because it kept getting pinched- but in the back of the ear. The band will be a little loose in the beginning, and its typical for it to slide forward with movement- but the trim should not be so close to the eyes that it may be causing some problems. I could be way off base here, and you should talk with CT and they might say, we can't trim this because this needs to stay, etc. BUT, really address your concerns with them, let them know about her being uncomfortable in the band, and I am sure they will try to adjust it so that it is not an issue. They did talk with me at length and if I really wanted something that did not compromise treatment, they accomodated me. You really do want to keep the band on as long as possible, especially in the crib where there is nothing but pressure on the back of that head, and you really do not know if your taking a chance missing a great huge growth spurt!! I have heard that children grow when sleeping as the body is rested (that's what I've heard anyway!). More time in it now, means less time in it altogether- just remember that when you want to take it off- and then think, well, this might add another week or two to treatment time- I could be missing a huge growth spurt! It might take you even a couple of weeks to get this adjusted to the point that Mackenzie is comfortable- and I think CT will tell you that it takes a few fittings for some to get it right. Any concerns that you have, whether its the fit, red spots, swollen eyes!, etc., don't hesitate to get in touch with them asap- the sooner you can get these issues worked out, the sooner you'll get sleep and Mackenzie won't be as miserable. Good luck and please keep us posted on what they do! ' Mom

The band will slip forward ( looked like a shar-pei puppy sometimes with the squished skin), but it should not be closing the eyes or even coming down to the bridge of the nose. That area should be trimmed a bit so that it does not come down so far. They did trim the front for as well, and this solved a lot of those issues. For sure contact them about this- his eyesight should not be hindered AT ALL! Keep us posted! ' Mom

If she is just unhappy with it being on, it might take a few days to get her used to it. ' Mom

Guest guest
, she is so freaking CUTE!!! OMG!!! and thanks for posting this....we are going through the exact same thing!!!! I did take Braedens off last night and I caught some grief from my husband...but you know he wasn't the one dealing w/the screaming and didnt have to be up @ 4:00am...Please anyone help...I am actually having to take Braeden back to have the band adjusted again...on the right eye the band shifts down and he cant hold his eye open much and sometimes it is pushed closed....Thanks ahead of time...Trisha need sleep help (it got long, sorry!) Hi all, Now that you've helped me thru Mackenzie wearing the band during the daytime, we need some help/advice on her sleeping with it on. The first night that she wore it (Tuesday night) we ended up taking it off of her about 1015pm or so because she woke up very unhappy and wouldn't settle until we did take it off. I talked to Margie, the orthotist at the Phoenix CT office, yesterday to ask if we could work up to Mac wearing the band all night and she said that we shouldn't. She said that if we did we could risk not having it on when Mac is having a growth spurt. So...last night we left it on her all night and let me tell you, none of us got any good sleep at all. Mac again woke up about 1020pm or so...we got her kind of settled down again and then she was back up at 1110pm. I stood over her bed and she just moved & moved & moved and couldn't seem to get comfortable. I got her out of bed...she was falling asleep against me but again couldn't settle down enough to get back to sleep. I so wanted to take off her band so that she could sleep but we decided to go thru with what Margie had said. She didn't settle down until after 100am and then was crying & moaning throughout the night. A couple of things I noticed last night were first that Mac's left eye (not the side where the band is supposed to be holding back the bossing) was quite swollen and secondly, that her band shifts on her head. No matter how I put the band on, it seems to shift up in the back and down in the front. I don't know if that is what is causing the swelling in her eye or not. Anyway, to make a long story a little bit shorter, a couple of questions - have any of you built up to your baby wearing the band all night, little by little? If so, did it affect the results? Does your baby's band shift as much as Mac's seems to do? I believe that I am putting it on the correct way. I've attached a couple of pictures so that you can see how she wears it during the day (the eating with band shot) plus some that I took this morning to show you her eye (it doesn't look as bad as it does in person) and to show you how it shifts around her ear. Any advice would be great... Thanks, & a very tired Mackenzie Phoenix, AZ For more plagio info

Guest guest
Trisha - I'm sure it's getting frustrating with all these adjustments! Just know that the first week is obviously the hardest trying to get it perfect! Guest guest
Hi , We had the same issues with the bands shifting on Sam and Sara, but as soon as they hit a growth spurt the shifting stopped. I think they leave a little room to begin with on purpose so that there is growth room. And maybe the band shifting is pushing the skin around Mackenzie's eye so it looks swollen, but really the skin is just bunched up. Does that make sense? Sam's band did the same thing, and when we took him in for his first adjustment they trimmed the band around the eyes (again) and the problem was gone. As far as her not sleeping well, is it possible that something else is going on, like teething? I'm one of those moms that will give Tylenol or Motrin at bedtime if my child is fussy, just in case it is teething pain. I don't do it all the time, but when I do it seems to help. Just a suggestion. And may I just add that Mackenzie is soooooo cute in her band. Gail need sleep help (it got long, sorry!) Guest guest
Glad to hear you can get in so soon Trisha; I am sure they'll again adjust it. The first week or even 2 can be difficult trying to get the band to fit just right. After you get thru this though, it should be smooth sailing to a rounder head. Let us know how it goes I'm sure you're VERY happy you're sooooo close to their office! Guest guest
, She originally got her band last Friday but due to some fitting problems, we had to eventually take her out of it by Sunday morning. We went back in on Tuesday and Margie (our orthotist) said to do the 3 hour checks that day and then to start her in it 23 hours that nite. We did and she didn't handle the band well at all so we took it off of her after 2 1/2 hours. She seemed to take naps in it well so I thought that we could get the whole night out of her last night. It was very difficult but the good news is that she took a nap (2 1/2 hours) this morning and actually woke up in a good mood with the band on. She had fussed a few times but I let her be and all went relatively well. I " m hoping that tonight will go as well. Keep your fingers crossed! & Mackenzie
Guest guest
I started to post earlier and then had tor un to crying babies sorry. I looked at her pictures she is beautiful! You must be a very proud mommy- better keep her away from the boys:-) Maybe she needs an adjustment- it could be that when she lays on her back the helmet is rubbing her ear or something. Why don't you call the ortho and see if you can get in for a look see and see if they have any rec. It lookslike you are putting the band on correctly and it is big when they first get them but they grow into them in no time. I hope this doesn't last long-it is so frustrating. Guest guest
MacKenzie is sooooo cute. What a beautiful little girl. She is looking happy enough with the band during the day so let's see what we can do about the night. If the band is too close to the eye or may be causing the swelling then CT needs to have a look at it and address the issues. Some trimming and another adjustment may be in order. She should be experiencing discomfort when she is sleepin in it at night. I'm sorry to hear of the lack of sleep. To say it is a major bummer would be an understatement!!!!
