Hey Marci. I have taken to the ER, all at 2 or 3 in the morning, two times since January of this year! The first time was because it scared me so bad and I didn't know what it was, and it was onset by a cold. He had the barking cought and the wheezing which they call stridor. He was given the steroid treatment the first time and it went away right away and we were left with a normal cough.

Then he had it in March and I was about to go to bed at 11 o'clock at night when it happened again. I tried doing what they told me to do before, walk outside in the night air with him and tried to do the hot shower thing with the steam, but it only made him freak out more, so I took him to the ER and they told me it was a good thing I did. I was there till 3 in the morning. They did the steroid treatment and a breathing treatment and made me wait an hour to make sure he was okay. The nurses at the ER told me that if the normal home remedies don't work, which they didn't, to bring him in. ly, with the stories they told me about the windpipe closing up, there have been extreme cases where it's completely closed and the kid couldn't breathe. I was not willing to take that chance. Croup is scary I know! Don't think yourself a paranoid mom if you take her in to the ER. I didn't feel like one. I knew there wasn't anything I could do, his was so bad!

Kellie,

The nurse practitioner told us the same thing about taking to the ER. He

said if the home remedies didn't work on the stridor then we should take her to

the ER. I felt much better hearing him say that sometimes it does require

extreme intervention. I'm also glad to hear that I'm not the only one who feels

like sometimes you just have to follow the gut and take the baby to the ER!

Thanks!

Marci
