Hi Elena welcome to you and Jake many moms can respond to the second band and

older band part of your question- I don't have personal experience with that

as my son was young when we banded him but I understand that you can see

positive results and many of our mothers have opted for a second band. I am

sure they will respond. Welcome and we are glad you have found us!

Elena,

I personally did not have to make this decision but I have read so many posts

from parents who have gone with the second band, and many are glad that they

did. I hope you can weigh the pros and cons and come out with a decision,

and still keep your sanity!! Good luck with it and if you decide to go for

the second, please keep us posted on how its going and if you felt it was

worth it for your case.

Hello,

My son Jake was diagnosed with severe positional

plagio (back right). No tort. He received the DOC

Band when he was 10 months. Now at 15 months we are

complete with the band but are trying to decide

whether to get a second band. Does anyone have any

experience with an older baby and second band? We are

wondering how much correction to expect. He has

received quite a bit of correction, however it is

still flat close to the ear.

Thanks!

Elena

Hi Elena:

Your story sounds just like mine! My Abby had severe plagio back

right as well, began her DOCband at 11.5 mos - 15.5 mos when we were

faced with the decision whether or not to get her a 2nd DOCband. We

decided against it, mainly becuz she had also wore a STARband from 8-

11 mos with no improvement at all, then we switched her to a

DOCband. So honestly she had been in 2 bands for 8 mos., + her age,

+ our long drives to the nearest CT..

I wish I could give you more info. about a 2nd band at Jake's age. I

hope someone else who did go for a 2nd band will give you their

story.

About how much correction has Jake rec'd? What does CT suggest?

Tough decision I know! Good luck.

Hi Elena

My second son Dylan was diagnosed with severe plagio and i was told from the

start that he would be a 2 band baby. He started his first DOCband at 8

months and outgrew at age 1 Thats when he started his second DOCband which

he is still in. I have been told the second band is concentrating on the

foreheand bossing more than anything. Also with his growth slowing down he

is getting more wear out of this one. I am also hoping his ears come more

into align as well. I wish you luck, keep us posted.

Best wishes

I already tried posting this response once so I apologize if it shows

up twice. My son started his first DOCband at 9.5 months and

received good results. He started out moderate/severe. He went into

his second band at 14 months. I am very happy with my decision to do

a second band. It really finetuned things you might say. He got a

lot of the major correction areas such as rounding with the first

band. With the second band he got major facial asymmetry correction,

ear alignment from 6mm to 1mm; and a lot more filling in of the flat

spot on the back left side. He's not 100 percent perfect but who

is. He looks normal which is what makes me very, very happy. I

would guesstimate total correction of about 90 percent. He went for

his exit casting today and is now officially a graduate!

Elena,

We have quite a few members here whose kids have worn 2 bands. I

can't recall any of them ever regretting it. In fact, I think they

have all been thrilled and amazed at the additional correction their

child received. I am sure more people will chime in and share their

experiences!

Elena,

My daughter started with her helmet at 9 months and ended at 15 1/2 months.

We did not get another helmet although she still had some flatness and

assymetry. We are satisfied with our choice and I guess that is really the

bottom line. If you feel like there is more correction to be had then it is

something to seriously consider. We have people who have gone both ways on

this one. Some have gotten the second band and have been very glad that they

did. I hope you get some good responses from people who have gone through the

decision making process on whether or not to get the second band.

Best wishes and let us know what you decide to do.

Hi - Thanks for the replies everyone sent. They were very helpful. We have decided to get a second band for Jake. He had his casting on Saturday. A bit more painful than the first...but we made it through. We have also switched clinics from the CT clinic in Chicago to the Straight Ahead PT (CT licensed clinic) in Cleveland, OH. It is closer to where we live (metro Detroit area) and less expensive for travel cost and treatment cost. The CT Chicago clinic was great and our decision was purely travel and cost related. An interesting thing we learned from the Cleveland clinic was that Jake does have some tort (it was never diagnosed). The PT's there specialize in tort and say that all plagio babies have some form. Thanks again.

Elena:

Thanks for the update. Sorry the 2nd casting was tough, but happy to

hear it's over! Any less travel time & money will be worth the

switch of clinics. You must have some looonnnngggg drives to Chicago

from Detroit area. I had long drives too to Chicago from Grand

Rapids but the drives were worth it for Abby's rounder head today.

Let us know when the band is in.

Elena,

Wow this is very interesting (and you are in great hands with KKR!). My CT clinic told me recently that they are going to have ALL kids do neck exercises for good measure because they see way too many kids that are not dx with tort that should be :(

Good luck and please keep us posted!

,

I have tried this too and feel that because I overcompensated using my right

side to accomodate ' left side, I would swear I got tort too! I was

reading that adults can get it (stiff neck really) as well! Oh my aching

neck! :o()

-

told me that we all have tort, it's just a matter of to what

degree.

I can touch my right shoulder with my chin, but not my left. It

doesn't hurt and I never noticed it before she said that!
