Hi everybody,

Just wante to introduce myself and ask a couple questions. I'm Kerri

and live in a suburb of Chicago. My baby is 6-month old . She's

had a flat head since 8 weeks, mostly back-left side and like many of

you, hasn't been treated yet because the doctor said not to worry

about it. A new doctor who hasn't seen her before brought it up

during her first visit with him. He suggested a specialist. So, it

looks like we are at the very beginning of possible treatment. I'm

hoping the specialist says postive things.

I have a zilion questions of course, but I'm really curious about a

couple of things:

Do we have any grounds for a malpractice suit against the doctor who

kept telling us not to worry?

Have any of you NOT sought treatment for your kids...did it indeed

clear up on its own?

Looking forward to hearing from you and exploring your site,

Kerri

Hi Kerri and welcome to the group. In all my time here I have not heard of

anyone suing their ped for malpractice. This is not to say it hasn't been

done or couldn't be done. There are certainly plenty of people here who got

the " it will round out on its own " garbage from their ped only to find out

that it doesn't always round out on its own!

We noticed 's flatness at about 3 months old. The ped blew us off and

gave us the standard " it will round out on its own " . Finally at a 7 month old

check he referred us to a specialist because it had gotten worse (NOT

BETTER). She didn't get the helmet until she was 9 months old and no

improvement had occured on it's own to that point. I have a stepson who is 6

and has some very mild facial assymetry. He was never treated for plagio.

Obviously for him it did not round out completely either. I do think,

however, that all babies are different. We have some people in the group who

have used repositioning, physical therapy, cranial-sacral therapy,

chiropractics, etc. to treat the plagio and did NOT use a helmet or band.

I know you have a tough decision ahead of you, but hopefully you will have a

great specialist that will help you to sort everything out. Let us know how

that appt. goes.

Kerri,

Welcome to the group! Everytime I hear of someone with a flat side on the

left or right only, a little voice says, make sure they know about

torticollis! This may not be a problem for you, but I always want to make

people aware because I've talked with many parents that seem to get a dx of

plagio first, and then months later learn that the torticollis is what made

their child's plagio worse. Does your daughter have any problems turning her

head left or right? Does she tilt her head? If the answer is no, then your

probably dealing with just plagio. If the answer is yes, you may be dealing

also with tort. In any case, ask your specialists to check into this for you

to determine torticollis is ruled out or not. Let me know if I can help you

in anyway if this applies to your situation (this is treated with physical

therapy). I have heard parents also say that they have had success with

repositioning, and others who haven't. My personal opinion is that at 6

months, most of the correction will have to be guided that way, if considered

severe. I think many have seen success that were considered mild or moderate

with repositioning- and I hope you will hear from members on that issue.

The info about the couple winning the lawsuit I hope will start making the

medical profession wake up about this condition. In any case, ask your

specialists lots of questions, and I think there is something in the database

on what questions are good to ask. The best thing you can do is educate

yourself, go armed with information to your Doctors, and decide for

yourselves what treatment option, you feel most comfortable with. Good luck

and please keep us posted!
