Guest guest
I am repeatedly amused by our kids ingenuity and appllication of it!!! Way to go Meghan! Loree Meghan bamboozles us!!  I haven't written in awhile however had to share the creativity of my Missy Meghan (age 15 DS).........when she was born one of the books I read said that one characteristic about people with DS is that they do not have the capacity for understanding humor........years and many laughs later I have gratefully disagree.......over and over this child has made me laugh and has laughed right along with me. Her latest escapade had me laughing yesterday...... I got an email from her teacher at school.......a little of the story......the school is trying to focus on " healthy " lunches ie less french fries (Meghans favorite food), less soda and chips only as " extras " that you have to bring money from home for........the teachers were so proud of themselves for working this out with the Special needs kids ....made contracts about french fries only on Wednesdays etc........well I guess the teachers have gotten a little lax in their enforcement........anyways, initially Meghan would want $3 for lunch money...however probably since Christmas it has gone up to $5..... I couldn't figure it out but had kind of relegated the " food " supervision to the teacher because she was quite invested in it (and I figured they could fight that battle lol)......so the email from the teacher says for some reason she notice that at lunch the kids all had snacks " ...chips, soda...and she asked them where they had gotten it and they said " Meghan " with big smiles!! Seems the cafeteria people assumed Meghans basic food was paid for through a " lunch money account " (I thought she used the cash I gave her) and no-one has really been paying attention.......so every day she has gotten the basic chicken sandwich free and has used her $5 to buy french fried and snacks for the other kids!!! Oh my gosh I was laughing when I got that email.......I think the teacher was shocked at Meghans ingenuity and that she hasd bamboozeled them )). Honestly it gives me a laugh every time I think of it. When she got home I asked her about it and she readily admitted that she had been buying the kids " treats " ......guess she didn't think they should go without!!! Needless today she will be going to school with only $2 lol...... Hope you are having a good Thursday and enjoying your children!! Guest guest
Well, if there were any sort of " problem-solving " goals on her IEP, I'd say she's met them, LOL. Good for Meghan, and what fun to be able to treat her friends to treats (sorry for your wallet though.) Great story, thanks for sharing! Completely agree with your " disagree " on people with DS not understanding humor... not only " gets " it but is actually quite funny herself. And, she really relishes in her jokes and puns, laughing and then saying " get it? get it? " to make sure we're enjoying it as well. And even if her joke wasn't funny, her laughter is so contagious that we all end up laughing along too. Glad that author was wrong! , mom to (16), (14 DS) and Sammy (12) On 5/10/2012 6:14 AM, Emileane wrote: > > I haven't written in awhile however had to share the creativity of my > Missy > Meghan (age 15 DS).........when she was born one of the books I read said > that one characteristic about people with DS is that they do not have the > capacity for understanding humor........years and many laughs later I have > gratefully disagree.......over and over this child has made me laugh and > has laughed right along with me.
