Thinking about JOY

I've been thinking a lot today about the " joy " thread, and was flopped

down on my bed after a long day, wishing I could crawl in instead of

doing a load of laundry, finishing the dishes, checking homework, etc.

One kid is practicing her trumpet, another playing the piano and

practicing a new song (i.e. playing the same part over and over and over

and over!)... Calgon take me away! In comes (PJs on, teeth

brushed, independently), and she jumps up on my bed and snuggles in and

says " You are the BEST Mom ever! " (sigh, maybe I will get through this

day yet!) Then I realize she's looking for a quiet place to sleep, away

from the music, and was trying to sleep with me, so maybe she's

buttering me up? Either way, very cool.

We start chatting about her upcoming birthday and she sits up and

proceeds to tell me she wants a new dress (pink, with a flower), new

shoes (purple, flats), a DS game (about princesses) and some new chapter

books (not baby books, teen books, LOL.) We discuss her cake

(chocolate, and it will have chocolate frosting with " Happy 14th

Birthday " in purple writing), and she laments that her dad does not get

her birthday off as a holiday, and why not... after all, it's her

birthday? (I remind her that we are also celebrating Luther

King's birthday, not just hers, and that's actually why we don't go to

school on Monday!) All of a sudden, she breaks into this huge grin and

starts laughing (which is contagious, of course.) I asked her what was

so funny.

A little history: is VERY certain that she is ALWAYS on

Santa's nice list, and would NEVER get close to the naughty list...

that's where her little sister might be, not NOT her. Very

self-righteous about this, every year since I can recall. So, this

year, as a joke, Santa put a bag of coal into her stocking, and also

into Dad's (because Santa didn't want her to be the only one.) Of

course, it was under all the goodies, she commented something like " huh?

I'm not on the naughty list " , shoved it back in the stocking, and

continued on with Christmas. Fast forward to today, I dumped the

remaining contents of everyone's stockings on the counter to put them

away, and lo and behold, there was the coal (untouched.) I left

everything there, meaning to tell the kids " get your stuff before

someone else eats it! " but forgot.

Apparently, while I was at my meeting tonight, finally checked

the coal out and of course, it was chocolate. So, she could barely tell

me she was laughing so hard. I asked her why this was so funny, and she

said that Santa THOUGHT he gave her coal, but it was REALLY chocolate,

and " you know, I LOVE chocolate! " For some reason, this whole situation

tickled her funny bone, and there were were laughing at the chocolate

coal, and then she says seriously, " you know, real coal is like a chunk

of rock.... not chocolate " (and then starts laughing about the chocolate

again.)

Not just joy, but an attitude adjustment for me as well. The laundry is

started, but nothing else done. The musicians are still practicing

(loudly) and the kitchen is a mess. But, I am still smiling at my sweet

teenager who thinks she's pulled one over on Santa, and that I'm the

best mom ever! We need to savor the awesome moments, they get us

through the rest of the stuff!

, mom to (16), (almost 14, DS), Sammy (12) and

aunt to (18)
