Your not alone in your frustration of getting the run around from Doctors, this Board can light up on that issue! There are older children who have gone with the band, and I'm sure CT will tell you that the results won't be as profound with an older child as the skull is not as malleable, but I think that some results have proven better than none. I hope more parents with older children in the band can share their experience with you so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not to band at this age. Although my son was banded fairly early, I will share our experience with you: 1. What age did you treat your child and how successful was it? 5-8 months in the DOC band. Approx. 90-95R% correction 2. Was it uncomfortable for your child? Not at all. He never had any problems to speak of regarding the band, including sleeping with it. 3. How long was the treatment? 3 months 4.Have you noticed any delays with your child in developement? None. (although he has tort and we could have experienced delays mostly from that, but agressive pt helped him to accomplish crawling and walking months before the expected milestone date. 5.Was it uncomfortable dealing with the "looks" from other people? At first this was hard- because you feel so exposed and people tend to feel sorry for you. But I found its all about attitude- if you are a happy parent and you have lots of smiles for people- they will not feel as sorry for you because you don't look so sorry for yourself and your child. It gets easier, and I always told myself, I don't care what anyone thinks or says, they don't know what I know and that we are helping our son. We also had lots of kids that wanted the helmet, lots of kids asked about it, and they were more into playing with him. Parents looked scared, but in the end, does it really matter what anyone thinks or if someone is staring- no! Believe it or not, towards the end of treatment, I walked taller and prouder of my son everyday! The stares are a small price to pay for the great results to be had! Good luck to you and I hope you can talk with CT soon about starting the process if that's the road you may travel. Please keep us posted! Do you have any pictures of your cutie to share? Guest guest
Hi, I hope this helps. Elena, mom to Jake > > 1. What age did you treat your child and how > successful was it? > Jake received his 1st band at 10 months. He will probably be getting a second band shortly (15.5 months). We haven't gotten the final measurements yet for the 1st band so I am not sure about success. However I would guess maybe 50%. He had severe plagio. His forehead and ears look much more aligned. Back has filled in toward middle but still somewhat flat to the right. > 2. Was it uncomfortable for your child? > He didn't even notice it. > 3. How long was the treatment? > Currently, 5 months. > 4.Have you noticed any delays with your child in > developement? > None at all. > 5.Was it uncomfortable dealing with the " looks " from > other > people? > I believe it is natural for people to stare at someone who is " different " . However I took the attitude that I am doing something very important for my child...the hell with what everyone thinks. I am aware of the stares but choose to walk proudly and ignore. I don't want my son to feel like I am upset/ashamed/embarrassed with him...I'm NOT. The few people that ask...I educate them on plagio. > I greatly appreciate any response form anyone who > has dealt > with this. Guest guest
Hi tte, I am so sorry to hear that your ped simply did not act on your concerns at an earlier age. That is so unfortunate. I'm glad you were able to find a DOCband clinic nearby. They will treat babies up to 24 months although you are correct, the treatment is not as effective as the baby gets older and the growth spurts slow down. My daughter started at 9 months so I can't comment too much on the older age thing, but we have some people here who started later and hopefully they will address those concerns. Here is my take on your other questions: In a message dated 6/4/02 6:00:29 AM Central Daylight Time, nikknac@... writes: << I would like to know the following: 1. What age did you treat your child and how successful was it? 9 months - she ended at 15 1/2 months and even though she does still have some assymetry we think she looks pretty darn good! 2. Was it uncomfortable for your child? Not at all. I was POSITIVE that would hate it and would not sleep and would cry all the time. QUITE the opposite - she slept fine and her behavior did not change. The only problem we did have was that as she got older she learned how to take it off and did so whenever she thought about it! 3. How long was the treatment? 9 months to 15 1/2 months. 4.Have you noticed any delays with your child in developement? None at all - she is actually well ahead of the curve with most things. 5.Was it uncomfortable dealing with the " looks " from other people? >> I won't lie about this - at first it was difficult, but truthfully it did get easier. It even got to the point where I would be out and I would think, " why is everyone looking at us? " and then I would remember, " duh - the helmet! " . It bothered me at first, but ultimately I realized I was doing the best I could for my baby and if people didn't like it - TOO BAD!!! Best wishes to you and your baby. I really hope things work out with the DOCband. I hope you will keep us posted! Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
