Guest guest
I have a small nutmet grinder that holds one piece of nutmeg. I just keep the nutmeg in for whenever I want to use it. You could also use a microplane grater. Sara ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ It's here! Your new message! Guest guest
Lorri, I can answer the piece about reusing soil. You cannot reuse it. At least, I cannot reuse mine. It is such a small amount that the roots completely innervate it so there isn't really anything to reuse. For Wheatgrass, I get two crops from one batch of seeds. After the second cutting, I give it to my cats and dog who munch on it until it is used up. Soil goes either outside or in the can. I have grown microgreens on a Hemp Bag and that worked great. You can reuse the Hemp Bag. In the book " Microgreens " the authors suggest avoiding terracotta and clay pots because they wick water away from the seeds. I don't like them because they dry out very quickly. (they are great for cactus though and sometimes for orchids). On the Sproutpeople website, Gill talks about how to use paper towels. I haven't tried it as I suspect they would dry out too quickly for me. The Hemp bag works great. I lay it in a casserole dish, dampen it, and then sprinkle the seeds on it. Have only tried arugula so far. I just ordered two books on microgreens and hope to learn more from them. I like to read about the stuff as much as I like to grow and eat it. n Rollings, PhD NJ Licensed Psychologist #4686 www.DrnRollings.com Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--we cannot expect things to be much better in this world... I had not thought to use the SproutMaster trays – I don’t like them for sprouts and have them sitting in a cupboard not being used. Guest guest
Lorri, You cannot reuse the soil because the roots are entangled and it it no longer viable. Same with the peat/perlite mix. If I grow in a sprouter the roots are attached. If you grow in soil, you cut them off and the roots stay in the soil.. All parts of the flower Sweet Pea are toxic to humans. X Don't know X " X " I do not use kelp in my soil less mix except for house plants. Never have use kelp for sprouts. Why do you think that you need to use kelp? ew Greens I have several questions from several different posts (if I can remember them all) – Oh, and Hi everybody! · If you use soil – can you re-use it? · If you use the Peat/Perlite mix – can you re-use it? · EW – you said you grow in soil because your wife doesn’t like the roots, but if you’re cutting them anyway (instead of pulling them) then why does it matter? · Why can’t you use sweet peas? · I know someone here uses burlap, can that be re-used? · Anyone here ever tried growing them in a terracotta tray? · I’ve read (a little) about using paper towels, has anyone here ever tried it? · If you use a soilless medium you need to add kelp, what about soil or the peat/perlite mix? Guest guest
On Sprout people’s website they recommend using kelp if you’re growing greens with a soilless medium. I’ve read other information stating it isn’t necessary though. Lorri (WA) From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of 99tomatoes@... Guest guest
I now always have greens in the freezer. I discovered that you can take your cleaned greens, put them in a gallon zip lock and when they are frozen, smash them til they crumble, This has to be done in the bag as soon as you remove from freezer. Put back in the freezer, it takes very little room and you always have greens for your smoothies SharonM
Guest guest
SharonM, This is GREAT tip, since I am a single-person household. I would not have thought that freezing fresh greens would work. But obviously, it does. :-)) Does this technique work for the more fragile greens like leaf lettuce (green and red)? Thanks, Lynn G > > I now always have greens in the freezer. Guest guest
I'm single and as soon as I think a fruit or veggie is going bad it goes in the freezer for a smoothie. No more wasted produce. Bananas, spinach, celery etc Tony

Guest guest
Well you certainly can't then thaw and use for salad, but it sure works well for use in smoothies and soups.
