Lori, I am moving back to WA state in 2 weeks. What online school did your

daughter do? My son is in the 8th grade and getting up is VERY hard for him. He

just struggles so much trying to keep up with his energy level. I try to think

that with Gamma that all is fine but it is good to hear that some of the kids

still have fatigue issues. He is also Bipolar so it is hard to know what drives

what with his sleep issues.

I did the same thing with my daughter. She is now 19 working part time and

did wonderful in school until she got to high school. It was overwhelming

with her lack of energy. On line school worked well for us for academics

and then she took electives at school to be with her friends but this

allowed her to sleep in everyday and do her school in the evening when she

had more energy. We as a family had to look at her disability and rearrange

our schedules and way of life to make our family “normalâ€.

I have three kids with CVID, and all are on IVIG monthly. Thus far, they've

all been able to attend public school. When they were little, our dr asked

me to quit work and stay home with my boys for one yr, and thought at that

time that one yr would be long enough to get them doing better. Well, Ive

been out of work for 7 yrs now. When they were little, we kept them home a

LOT, we even stopped going to church for a long time, and eventually had to

change to a smaller church.

Since they've been on IVIG, theyve done much better. Now they are 12,9 and 7

My twins were born @ 30 weeks. Interesting that so many preemies end up having

Babies before 37 weeks are not mature at birth and so they are playing catch up

trying to get their immune systems to function. A baby less than 32 weeks is

MUCH more likely to have some transient immune issues. Breastfeeding is the BEST

way to develop your babies immune system and is incredibly supportive to a

inadequate system whether genetic or otherwise aquired. We also have a high

premie rate in this country compared to other westernized countries.

Cassidy is in a daycare. She's in their private kindergarten program and there

are 14 other kids in her class. In the afternoons though, after 3pm, she moves

to another classroom where there are closer to 25 kids. Pre-IVIG we never could

have done that. She was sick constantly the moment we put her around other kids.

Now with the IVIG she gets sick occasionally but gets over it within two days

and without antibiotics. She's been sick four times so far this year which is

amazing for her. I think it depends on your kid honestly and how well they do on

the IVIG. Cass at least seems to be okay with the daycare/school setting as long

as she's on her every 3-week IVIG regimen. Incidentally, Cassidy will be

starting public school next Fall in first grade and will go to an afterschool

program as well. Hopefully she continues to do well! Good luck with everything,

There are SO many opportunities for kids to share germs at this age. It gets

better when they are a little older and do not put things in their mouths etc.

But.... my son really could not be in groups much until he was on gamma globulin

My son was getting the 23 valent polysaccahride pneumococcal vaccine every

year.....his antibodies were good for the first couple of months, then dropped

off to almost zero after a few months.   They monitored my son one month after

the shot, then at 2 months, then at 6 months, then a year....that's when he'd

get a new one...

Hi I am not sure if anyone has answered your questions. I am sorry if they have

not. It sounds like you are just starting out in this process and have lots of

questions about the possible diseases as well as your son's treatment. I would

encourage you to go to the IDF website at http://www.primaryimmune.org.You can

call them and they will send you out some incredible booklets that will help you

immensely. This is a wonderful group with lots of support and information as

well. I will try to answer some of your questions tomorrow but need to go to bed

Hi again, I feel for you, so much to worry about!  Tevin is lucky with you as

his mommy....following up on all that!    

 

I wanted to tell you I know how you feel about the school!   I hate the way

they act like our kids are just out for a vacation!   My son's former

principal called truancy officer and sent a certified letter notice while my son

was in the hospital very ill on IV antibiotics....and I had already contacted

the school daily and sent notes from the admitting doctor....the principal

finally told me that a student's absences bring the school's overalll " rating "

down.  SO SORRY, A**HOLE, but my child doesn't want to be so sick!

 

Anyway, now we have it in his IEP...that he will be missing more school days

than the average kid because of his Diagnosis..make sure you get an IEP for your

son, or at least 504 accommodations.....Check with the IDF website, they publish

a wonderful free booklet about educational/school issues, they address the way

to do it and how to write it on the IEP or 504......The I.D.E.A.  Individuals

With Disabilities in Education Act of 1997 addresses this.....once you get it in

his IEP it's against the law for them to harass you or him.......you can call

for an IEP,   look up the website for slaw, they will cover all about

that.

 

Ya'll are not alone, we are all behind you......and most of us have dealt with

this,  ugh!  Like we don't have enough worry, then the schools act like this

instead of being supportive!    Finally my son is in a good, supportive

I will have to contact the IDF to get that book and more information to help

Tevin. We just had a IEP meeting yesterday.They were trying to blame his

absences on him be slower then other kids. Instead of him having a learning

promblem form his neurological disease. They said we weren't rasing him right

and we do disipline him but feel bad cause he always sick. The school just

really makes me mad and they are A** holes. I going to have to let it blow up in

there face. I know my son bettrer then they do are ever will. That all the

school worrys about is ratings and money.

His hematolgist is moniotoring to see if the penumococcal shot holds. Right now

this is the happiest and healthies I seen him. Ipraying it will last. He being

geting sick since he was 3 months old. We found out about him having low white

cells when he was four. I been going through this since he was a baby He

doctor trying ever thing not to put him on IVG our give me abad diagonosis.

Thank you Sue for the comments I need to know I was not alone in battling this

disease. I glad you found a better school for your son. What kind of treatment

is your son on? Is it helping h im fight more infections?

Someone has posted on facebook and my space, regarding a parent having AIDS without their permission and disclosing it on their childs site as well.

Any advice or opinions regarding actions to be taken or whom to contact for judicial discretion ?

The parent with AIDS could contact facebook or myspace and make a complaint, or the parent could file a civil suit against those responsible for the disclosure, but I am not aware of any jurisdictions in which this would be a criminal matter and thus a matter to be reported to law enforcement or judicial officials. In any event, I don't believe it's a matter in which a third-party's involvement would be welcomed.Regards,Nick--

Hi Sammi,

 

Depending on the essential oil I use anywhere from 1-3% total. Also, bear in

mind that scents can morph for better or worse during the curing process.  A few

months ago I used 1 oz of spearmint/peppermint eo blend in a 160 oz  batch of

soap and the scent was so strong after curing that I  gave away the entire batch

just to get it out of the house LOL. 

 

As for helping a citrus oil " stick " you can try blending it with a base note oil

(patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood, sandalwood) to anchor the fragrance.

If you read the book too literally, young crazy trying to follow the " rules "

that were dreamed up by the FDA and large companies. It's really pretty

interesting to see, the large companies out there who don't comply.

However I will caution you, if you make claims, they will delight in shutting

you down and chances are, they'll likely clean out your shop in the process.

I've been blown in by Ebay customers and gotten e-mail from the FDA regarding

claims.

Hi Sammi:

The old rule of thumb as I remember is 1 oz per pound of soap. And sure, there

will be variations.

You can try to saponify at lower temps so the citrus does not fade due to heat,

but it still tends to fade. You could try to shrink wrap soon after the soap is

dry, but you'll probably still get some sagging wrap later on.

There is a fixative out there for citrus, but it escapes me at the moment what

it is? Benzoin possibly?

Sammi, Litsea is quite strong, so I'd only use it at about 20% if you want

to keep the original citrus scent, especially if it's not lemon. The

problem, though, is that even w/ Litsea, the other citrus scent will fade

after awhile, leaving you with Litsea.

That's been my experience, anyway.

What is your recommendation when you want to make a citrus scent? I have

grapefruit, orange etc. that I want to use but am afraid that I will waste them

because they will fade.

If you are worried about fading you may want to consider making a smaller batch

which you could use up more quickly before fading would become an issue. 

Barring that I would start with 20% Litsea and 80% of your other citrus and see

how that works with your recipe and scent preference. 

 

One thing that I often do when trying to come up with a scent is take a small

square of paper towel (say 2 x 2) and add drops of oils (keeping very good

notes) until it smells like what I have in mind.  then I seal it in a baby food

jar and forget about it for a week.  When I go back to check on the blend I have

a better idea of where I might want to make adjustments before I soap it.  Then

I soap it, and after it cures check it again and make notes about any necessary

adjustments to the next batch.

Aside from Litsea, you could add a little low note, such as oakmoss or

patchouli, not enough to scent it, but enough to help anchor the citrus.

Some other ideas include the zest of the fruit, clay, ground oats, and cool

temps. Soak the clay, etc., in the eo before you soap. I don't know if you

want to use FO's or not, but you could also add that to take over when the

EO scent fades.

To be honest, though, other than adding FO, I don't know of a way to make

the citruses, especially lemon and orange, last for more than about six

months in CP/HP soaps.

I'm sorry, Sammi. I didn't realize you were a new soaper.

When I mention clay, I mean a food or cosmetic grade clay. At my local

health food store, I can find Bentonite (aka Fuller's Earth), or Kaolin.

Rose and Green clays are fairly common, but probably need to be ordered.

The green and rose are often used to color soap, too.

Hi Sammi - to resize a recipe, try using the spreadsheet at this link.

One of the last tabs in it allows you to change the size of the recipe on

several factors.

As to the lye - there is no need to reheat - most often, the cooler the lye the

better and the easier it will be for you to soap. (you can make the lye/water

up the night before if you have a place to put it that won't be dangerous or in

anyone else's way) DEFINITELY DON'T put it on your stove..
