Re: [aca-members] " Osteopathic College in Lebanon, Oregon? "

There are a few on this list who have strong backgrounds in functional

medicine. I consider myself one of them. Few can say they keep up on the

current

literature as much as I do.

With this in mind, I have said and will continue to say that mainstream

medicine as we know it today is a failed system. If we pulled the money

out of

the equation, it would fall like a house of cards. Very little research to

back up therapeutic approaches, and those that do aren't all that

effective.

Is an improvement OR of .78 at $300 / month with a host of negative side

effects a system we want to jump onto? And do you truly understand what it

means

to maintain a formulary and keep up with what is and isn't covered under

what

insurance plan? How does less money with higher overhead sound?

Don't give me the line about having the right to take patients off their

meds. How many do you think are off of Zetia already given the news? I

CLEARLY

inform all patients that it is against my scope and that MY goal is to

remove the need for the meds they are on. Let them or their PCPs decide at

that

point what to do about their meds. Do you know what that does to my

credibility? Who do you think the patient trusts more at that point?

Even if we had limited prescribing rights (NSAIDs, myorelaxers, pain meds)

is that worth it? How often do you REALLY need these scripts in your

office?

True myospasm I see about 1-2 X /yr. As for pain meds--I'm good at what I

do. My goal is to significantly reduce pain med usage in a short period of

time.

And do we REALLY want to hop on the bandwagon? Weren't chiros always the

individualists fighting for what they thought was right? Do you understand

that as little as 400 mg ibuprofen begins to disrupt the integrity of the

GI

tract? So, do we get the right to prescribe even 800 mg ibuprofen (or

worse--indomethicin) KNOWING that it is going to negatively affect their

health? What

happened to " first do no harm? "

Or do we hold true to our ideals?

And let's face it--the most dangerous conditions facing our health today

are

osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, CVD and cancer. ALL of these we, as DCs,

are already fully equipped to manage and prevent these better than any PCP

with prescribing rights.

I feel better now...
