Guest guest
Shelagh, Do the beekeepers process the beeswax in anyway before you purchase it? Or do you afterwards? Thanks, I buy beeswax from local beekeepers (try an ad in your local paper and they contact you). It's natural, unbelievably cheap and no probs so far with clumping. Guest guest
No, I didn't even think about that. I get it in two ounce blocks and just shave bits off as I need them. I've made lip balms, soap, face cream, lotions, all sorts of things and had no problems with it so far. What kind of processing are you thinking of, or is this a general question? You've got me worried now! Shelagh Re: beeswax > Shelagh, > > Do the beekeepers process the beeswax in anyway before you purchase it? Guest guest
As far as I know your local beekeepers are just going to melt down and filter their beeswax. I am not sure what they do to make the white pellets but I think someone mentioned on this list before that it is bleached in the sun. Guest guest
Barb, The beeswax gets melted with the oils. Common usage is 1/2 to 1 ounce per 6 pound batch. Guest guest
Pam, The price of beeswax from a beekeeper will vary depending on the supply. Weather conditions greatly affect flowering vegetation, thus affecting the production of wax as well as honey . For example, a hot summer dries up the flowring plants early on in the season, so there isn't much for the bees to forage. Very little nectar results in very little honey and wax. In my area, filtered beeswax is selling for approximately $4.25 to $4.75 a pound which also takes into account the labor involved by the beekeeper in filtering the wax. The great thing about getting beeswax locally is being able to get a quality product directly from the source, as well as saving on shipping costs. Most beekeepers sell in large blocks - anywhere from a pound on up. What I did with my wax in order to make it easier to use was to break off chunks and melt it down using a melting pot in a pot of water (never melt over direct heat). I then poured the melted wax into plastic ice cube molds and when they hardened up, I was able to pop them right out. These smaller cubes are much more manageable than trying to chip hunks off of a big block each time I needed beeswax in one of my formulations. Guest guest
, this is Louise. I have just been given 2, almost 3 kg beeswax, but it looks almost black. Do you have any idea as to get it white after the filtering process? Thanks Beeswax , This may not help with the current beeswax emergency, but you may try looking for a local beekeeper for your next purchase. I found a local supplier who will sell it for next to nothing. It has to be melted down, filtered, and poured into a mold, but that's not a very big deal. This man was incredibly accommodating and said he had lots as the market was not what it had been in the past. You may try looking at www.beekeeping.org. You could also call your local county extension agent (found in the phone book under your county name). Another place to ask might be a local Natural Resource Conservation Office. I found a bottle of honey with a local phone and address on it at a neighborhood market, and just called him right up! Hope this helps, Browning Southern Scents Soapworks

Guest guest
OK, Beth, I'll put you down for yellow as it's unbleached. :-) How much do you want, though? It comes in an 8 lb. box or a 25 lb. box. On this one I don't mind dividing up an 8 lb. into 1 lb. portions if I need to btw. They're easy enough to package in a plastic bag. Thanks for putting this together. I am happy to sign up for Beeswax. I use unrefined, unbleached (if those are the correct terms). **************Gas prices getting you down?
