Guest guest
A friend of mine from Minnesota had to have a simple surgery to remove an intestinal tumor. A lot of people in the medical field assert that “there is no minor surgery”. See below (don’t read before lunch). E. Abrahamson, D.C. Chiropractic physician Lake Oswego Chiropractic Clinic 315 Second Street Lake Oswego, OR 97034 503-635-6246 Website: http://www.lakeoswegochiro.com I cannot believe it is taken me this long to feel good enough to answer!!! I am cc ing others to fill them into the saga too. I still have trouble with my brain and my hands working together so may be some horrendous mistakes!!!! I was again trying to find out what was causing severe right sided pain that I have suffered with for YEARS. I finally was referred to a gastroenterologist. After initially treating me for bowel problems, he decided to do HIS type of colonoscopy. He went into the small intestine, which, by the way is not done in a normal colonoscopy. He found what is called a carcinoid tumor, he clipped and tested, and it was cancerous. These usually are, are very slow growing, most all of us have them, and do not usually cause death. Only treatment is surgery, and no other cancer treatment follow-up is successful, so not done. The one I had was large and he felt was affecting my bowels, and causing the pain. He referred me to a surgeon, in Willmar. I met with Dr Kroger, and he said this was a simple operation, he had done many times, " snap, snap, snap " and he and Ed spoke about airplanes and flying. So I set it up for after Christmas. The time at Willmar I hardly remember. What occurred was, when the large and small bowel were cut and then put back together, that area did not hold and I was leaking fecal matter into my stomach area. I just kept getting sicker and sicker, while in Willmar, and then when at home. I finally figured out something was very wrong, as I was hallucinating, and throwing up constantly. The morning that Ed called 911 I started loosing the fecal matter from the front and the back, with no control. I went to the small hospital in Granite, and once they got a CT of my stomach area, I had a choice to go to a larger hospital where they had the facilities to handle this. I went by ambulance to Methodist in the Cities. I do not remember much for the first month, but as Theresa and Ed tell me I was as near to death as one can get. I had so many CT scans I probably still glow!!! I ended up with eight different drains put in me to drain the fistulas that had occurred, and others that were needed for easier care by the nurses. I was there eight weeks, and was able to return home with one drain. I had to go back to the Cities every two weeks for that drain, that was in the largest fistula to be checked or repositioned. I finally got that drain out on May 2nd. The Drs say it will take about a year for full recovery. I am weak, have no stamina, suffer from arm and shoulder pain, from being in bed for so long, and my face is healing from the fever blisters I got in Willmar from the severe fevers I had there. I also had severe fevers in Methodist. I so not want to go into the pain aspect, but I was on alotttttt of drugs for a long time. I am now going to the DC to get my shoulders and arms back to normal, as have pinched nerves. As I stated before, my brain is slowly healing too. I have good days and bad, and take allot of ibuprofen and Advil. The pain wears me down too. So that is a short version of a long time!!!! I truly do not remember the 1st month of this ordeal, which Ed and Theresa say is for the best. Just do not be without a good health insurance policy, as the bills have been totally unbelievable!!!!!!!!! I am glad to have made my 56th Birthday, and my new mantra is " I hate 08 " !!!!!! I am still in allot of pain, so each day is monitored by that. I see the cancer Dr this week. Hopefully, the surgery to remove the tumor was a success, as if it was I should not have a reoccurrence. So that is that. A simple procedure gone wrong, but I lived thru it. The Drs and nurses at Methodist were angels, but I cannot say the same for at Willmar. I have been out about 4 times and have driven for the first time last week. I did loose my Sheltie, as she would not eat when I was in the hospital, so that was awful bad. Ed and the kids got me a new puppy for mothers day, another Pomeranian, which has been my therapy. Outside every 20 minutes for potty training. Hahahahaha I found out that I have allot of friends, during this ordeal, and thank the Lord for that too!!!!!! I am now doing some cooking and cleaning, but Ed has been in charge of all, and I think is getting sick of it now. He always helped with the vacuuming as I would get the right sided pain. This took me near an hour to type, as fingers hurt and don't always do what I want. Yikes!!!!!! I thank all for the prayers and gifts, and keep up with the prayers as I am starting to get frustrated with the slow recovery. I am told to take it easy, oh yeah, not in my vocab.!!!! Hope that fills you in on what happened. One never knows what is in the future, and when you go thru something like this, you learn to like the future. Guest guest
Whe I first entered nursing, stories such as this were one/5 years .... as I left nursing, stories of this magnitude were a dozen/ week .... and it these types of stories that made the old nurse 1) attempt to leave medicine which didn't work and 2) become the DC that I thankfully am today. And it is these stories that continue to drive my anger, despair, frustration and distrust of medical doctors today. These are the types of stories that cause me to talk about 'what they leave in their wake' .....no matter 'how sweet' a person you think that MD is, go talk to the 'failures' of that doc before you agree to accept services from him/her especially surgically services .... and ESPECIALLY anesthesia, orthopedics or neurological services. Heard (and participated at the bedside of) too many stories of this nature, Sunny Sunny Kierstyn, RN DC Fibromyalgia Care Center of Oregon 2677 Willakenzie Road, 7C Eugene, Oregon, 97401 541- 344- 0509; Fx; 541- 344- 0955 From: drscott@...Date: Tue, 15 Jul 2008 13:02:44 -0700Subject: A simple surgery A friend of mine from Minnesota had to have a simple surgery to remove an intestinal tumor.
