Guest guest
Child patients evacuated By Kleinman December 3, 2005 http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/child-patients- evacuated/2005/12/02/1133422111128.html Melbourne,,Australia CANCER patients were evacuated from a Royal Children's Hospital ward this week after building work increased levels of a dangerous airborne bug. Ten children were moved after the hospital's infection control team discovered increased levels of fungi, including aspergillus, which can cause potentially fatal infection in people with weak immune systems. The director of the hospital's children's cancer unit, Associate Professor , said the move was precautionary. " The bug is present everywhere, " he said. " In an unwell person it can cause superficial infection of an open wound or deep infection of internal organs such as lungs or sinuses. We have been monitoring levels constantly because, with the construction work, we know that anything that creates dust will release spores … " We did not want to take any risks with the patients, so we moved them, not because any of them had come to any harm. " Hospital spokeswoman Webber said: " The ward will be fully cleaned, the air levels checked and we will investigate whether the children can return. " She said work on the new cancer centre had stopped for the time being.
