Hey folks any experience with anti depressants causing weight gain? Have a patient who is concerned about a 30lb weight gain in 2 months. Nothing has changed in diet etc, but has been taking Effexor and Levo.... sp??? for depression.

Anyone know of cases where these can contribute to weight gain??

Patient also taking Ambien and Clariton.

H'es 30yo.

Thankya

Common side effect to taking antidepressants. Lots of seretonin

receptors in the gut, more than are in the brain.

Very common side effect. Saw it all the time in my 9 years as a psychiatric nurse, asn still see it today in my practice. Makes you crave sugar and fat.
