IMPORTANT!!!!! CDC Public Comment Opportunity

Dear Colleague,

From 2001 through 2004, CDC convened three workgroups to

make recommendations on how to develop CDC’s first ever

agency-wide research agenda. As you know, in January 2005,

the CDC Office of Public Health Research, Office of the

Chief Science Officer, Office of the Director, embarked on

the monumental task of implementing these recommendations

to develop the CDC Health Protection Research Guide, 2006-

2015. Many of you were able to join the 450 people who

participated in our March 2005 Public Participation

Meetings to help us develop the research agenda. We are

pleased to report that the public comment draft of the

Research Guide will be announced in the Federal Register

and officially released this Friday, November 18, 2005.

The 60-day public comment period will run from November 18

through January 15, 2006.

The Research Guide will serve as a blueprint for research

areas that should be addressed during the next decade by

CDC and its partners in response to current and future

needs and events. The Research Guide will also be used to

help define the research priorities that support CDC’s new

Health Protection Goals, and will enable the creation of a

shorter-term research agenda that stems from the goals

implementation activities currently underway. As you

know, the public comment draft of the Research Guide was

developed with extensive input from a wide range of

federal, state, tribal, academic, and non-profit partners,

as well as the public-at-large. CDC staff and its external

advisory committees also provided input. After integrating

this input to produce the current draft, we received the

CDC Director’s approval to move to the public comment

phase. CDC is now seeking additional review and comment

through the formal public comment period.

During the formal public comment period, you will be able

to submit written comments in three ways. You will be able

to review the Research Guide and enter comments directly at

our

Website,

http://www.rsvpBOOK.com/custom_pages/50942/index.php.

You may also email comments to ResearchGuide@....

Finally, you will be able send comments to our address:

Office of Pubic Health Research, U.S. Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention, 1600 Clifton Road, N.E., Mail Stop

D-72, Atlanta, GA 30333.

We hope you will notify your colleagues and partners about

the availability of the public comment draft and encourage

them to disseminate it to others, review it and submit

comments during the official comment period. We will be

publicizing the availability of the Research Guide as well

through our Website, targeted emails and a press release.

After the public comment period, we will consider the

comments we receive and revise the Research Guide to

produce the final version.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact

us (see below).

We look forward to receiving your comments on the Research

Guide. We thank you for your continued interest and

support in developing this landmark document which we

expect will enhance CDC‘s ability to maximize the health

impact of public health services and programs.

Bob Spengler, Sc.D. and Robin Wagner, Ph.D., M.S. and

Perhaps it would be a good idea if each of us that wrote a letter to congress

sent it along to the CDC. There were many well written letters drafted in

support, and our efforts should continue to be used in support of our plight.
