natural colors

Hi ,

Here is my file on Natural Colors hon. Some I have used and others I have

not but know others that had very good results with time. Remember that

these are very earthy colors so will not be the stark colors of the

pigments and oxides that some use. HTH hon. TTYS :-)

Natural Colorants

There are many spices and herbs that can be used for coloring soaps. These

are just a few, some that I have worked with and some that other soapers

have worked with and found to work very well. This will give a natural

color to the soap and not the stark, un-natural look of the artificial

colors. When mixing them you will have to play with the amounts till you

reach the color level that you want. Or just wing it and it will still be a

lovely color and make wonderful soap. Do some small batchs if you want to

see how it does. Make notes on what you use and how much oil or water that

you used it in. They can be used by infusing them into the oils and/or into

the waters if you like. Again more experimenting to see how it works for

you and the oils you use. Then you can multiply what you used in your small

batch, for a larger batch and get pretty much the color that you want. Say

that you use 2 tsp. of powdered Parsley to 1 lb. of oils and it makes the

color green you like. Then when you make a large batch that you want to be

green, say a 5 lb. oil batch size, then you multiply 2 tsp. by 5 and you

will use 10 tsp. for that batch. It will give close to, if not exactly the

same color that you got with the smaller batch. Remember that oils and lye

contribute to how the color works in the soap, so wing it or go with some

small experiments to get what you are looking for.

I do recommend that you powder you herbs or spices very finely so that they

will incorportate into your soaps well, therefore giving more color through

out the bars. Also this keeps the herbs or spices from scraping and causing

damage to the skin.

I wish!

My dd and sil went to Key West for their honeymoon. When they arrived, I

heard it was sunny and warm. <sigh> But, get this, on their way to the hotel,

they hit a peacock! What? Do they wander around down there??

I'm thinking of getting some peacock feathers to welcome them back. ;-)

Hi Beth:

Thanks so much for the Link. I'll check it out.

It could be me. We'll see how the mad scientist experiments go. LOL

Hmmm, no paprika!

Oh yeah, I've been seeing the notices for the gathering. I'm planning on coming

up. Sue mentioned that she wanted to spend the night vs. drive that distance

back and forth like we did last year. I concur. I'm not sure if she'll make it

at this point.
