Guest guest
Docs, I'd appreciate knowing the current status of chiropractic services being referred by the VA Hosp for vets. Pt (disabled Vietnam vet) was told by his PCP at the VA-Pdx that no referrals are being made at this time. Many thanks, Lily Roselyn,, DC

Guest guest
Hi there, I have lobbied along with several friends/colleagues on this issue in Wash DC. You have to write to your local senator and ask that they push the VA to allow more chiropractors in the NW visen. Currently there are a few chiros available for treating within the VA, but the NW is composed of (those of you who know better correct me if I am wrong) Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. This NW visen is one of the most resistant to Chiropractors for some reason. Anyhow, we push the bill every year so as it comes up it is important to watch for postings from Vern or the ACA/ICA if you are part of that. Mostly though just keep bugging your senator so they will put the pressure on the VA to be more open. Of course once they have more Chiropractors available you will have to be a part of the VA to get the referrals.... Hope that makse sense. Guest guest
Yes Franchesca, The bill that would place a DC in every VA facility across the nation has been moving through the process in Washington DC and has a lot of support so I remain very hopeful. Having a colleague in each and every VA facility will put an end to the "non-referal" baloney by the VA PCPs.... Vern Saboe RE: VA chiropractic coverage? Guest guest
Vern, We always appreciate your hard work in the trenches. Of course it goes without saying that orthopedic apologist ashamed of subluxation chiropractors in the VA system might do more harm than good. We are only now learning how dumbed down the public’s perception of chiropractic lifestyle care has become because of 3-6 visit prescriptions by managed care. It just had to be said. ( E. Guest guest
My experience at the local PDX VA is somewhat different. I accepted a 9 week contract to teach restorative yoga there this spring, which was completed recently. In all, I worked with 75 doc and staff. They are actively looking for alternative protocols to supplement their basic services. They've hired a specialist, an RN really, to work as the Integrative Medical Coordinator that hired me. The fact that I was a chiropractor was incidental. The training with them went very well, evaluated on average at 4.5 on a 5 scale, testing administered by the VA. I was informed yesterday that they are currently seeking more funding for "integrated" services and were waiting on the go-ahead from the Feds before funding would be available. The coordinator of integrated services said they had a waiting list of 200 staff and physicians signed up for yoga with me. My notion is that they are moving toward in-house rather than a referral basis for care. I'm taking more of a wellness approach: "here's how you can maintain the human frame and vastly improve your capacity for self-healing, rather than depend on passive care for your well-being." Some of you may consider this heretical, but the shift toward greater personal responsibility for one's health is already underway. We will need to give people handles on how we may be most useful to patients.
