Hi BFLifers, There is a very serious virus going around the PC's of the

world. You receive a message called " I love you " in upper case. You open it

and then it replicates and sends the same message to everyone in your address

book. It damages all the PC's that it hits so BEWARE. The virus can

innocently come from someone you know - this is the idea - like the one I got

from my husband this morning. Obviously I wouldn't think it weird him

sending this message and without the warning I would have opened it and

flooded everyone in my address book. So before you click onto NEXT, check

the title of the e mail before opening. Leaner.

This is the dreaded worm virus. It took all my files and sent them

to thousands of people and then did a number on my computer, blocking

me from using almost all my programs. With some tricky maneuvering

(at least for a computer-stupid punk like myself) I was finally able

to remove the virus, but after sending some of you folks a huge

amount of potential grief. I greatly apologize and regret having my

firewall down for that short period of time.

To re-emphasize Mel's point, do not open attachments that seem

curious or from any letter asking for strange information. Do not

open any attachments from me (tiffandchip@...), because I don't

send attachments, so ya know it's bogus. This forum was my only

available warning center, since the Internet was the only thing I was

able to work... not my mail, not even word or telnet.

Don't even think of opening such attachments from anyone, because

they have been shown to contain a fairly vicious computer virus.

Fortunately, I never open any attachments from anyone, so I simply requested

that the

sender prove his credentials first and send me a FAX of the material that he

wished me to read. Later I read that these messages, being conveyed largely

through Windows-driven Microsoft products like Internet Explorer, Outlook

Express and MS Word, contain a virus.

As a matter of importance, remember that attachments are

automatically discarded by the service to Supertraining, so that, if you

obtain any mail with any attachment purporting to be from the Supertraining

list, it is a phoney. Don't open it.

One of our members has been doing a fine job of using his computer

skills to trace the origin of certain individuals (three so far) who have

been banned from this and other groups and who have been acting as trolls using

bogus or different email addresses trying to discredit this group and

myself, so that, if you receive any unusual or unexpected messages from

strangers,

do some checking before accepting them at face value. Especially do not

open any attachments or take seriously the letters from such people.

Apparently a few of these trolls are often posting on the MFW weights chat site.

The specific virus behind this is W32.Sircam.Worm@mm, discovered July 17. It

contains its own SMTP engine, and propagates in a manner similar to the

W32.Magistr.Worm. It is considered to be a HIGH LEVEL THREAT due to very high

distribution. Update your definitions if you have not done so.

[Please explain to the list what the last sentence means. MCS]

Dr Siff: FYI, I have received two messages from Supertraining that definitely

came through with attachments. These were with subject " Re:

Biomechanics of the Snatch "

[According to , that is not supposed to happen when their attachment

facility

is immobilised. I will investigate. Mel Siff]

Sorry, the last sentence means update your virus definition files. Virus

protection against Sircam was only issued by Norton last Tuesday and the virus

was already rampant at that time. It continues to spread throughout the net.

Every computer it hits will attempt to propagate it hundreds of times.

Dr. Siff,

Does offer any kind of detective/troubleshooting assistance for situations

like this? With the number of discussion groups they host, they may have

someone analogous to the IT group at universities and other large companies that

have to debug their systems and keep them secure.

[i have written to them, but they just refer me from one department to another.

For example, for most

of yesterday I could not even enter my own Supertrainign group to read, let

alone moderate messages -

I tried everything conceivable and then noticed that my wife was also cut off

from her SMART Fitness

group, which showed that there was a problem with . Eventually it

rectified itself, but

just replied to me to say that my letter needed to be directed to another

department, another dept, etc.

Members of this list have no idea of some of the huge frustrations that I have

daily in trying to maintain

a useful list. At leas tit is free and none of us have to pay for its use -

yet! Mel Siff]

Whoever the numbskull is who's responsible for this needs to stop hiding behind

a forged e-mail identity and grow up.

[That's exactly how I feel - the Feds should make the penalty prohibitively high

and make a good example

of anyone who abuses the Internet by creating and distributing electronic

viruses. Mel Siff]

Likewise, if this list ever shuts down (even temporarily) I think we would all

have much greater appreciation

for the effort involved in overseeing it - and the value of the information

being exchanged.

Just as an injury teaches us what a privilege it is to be able to train hard, it

is well worth the " nuisance "

of sorting through all the daily posts to learn from others. Thanks, Mel, for

moderating such an outstanding

knowledge resource.

[it is my pleasure to be of service! However, members might have to display

some patience over the next

few days, because seems to be having a lot of trouble recently, possibly

associated with the current

assault of viruses. During the past few days, I temporarily lost all access to

the list and all moderating

capabilities, then last yesterday, all messages were erased from the in-basket.

I have just come on-line this

morning. So, if you have any problems over the next week or so, please have

patience and don't re-send letter

after letter, since I have absolutely no control over such problems. Mel Siff]

Thanks for this, we too have had a virus e-mail problems at Central Lanc's. the messages generally say "Hi" or "Hello". I have had one and deleted it straight away. But thankfully nothing at home. But it serves as a good reminder to keep backing everything up incase you are struck down.

-----Original Message-----From: Cowley [mailto:sarah@...]Sent: 28 January 2004 18:30 Subject: virus warningYesterday, I deleted without opening about 15 suspect messages from my email system. My virus protection system is up to date and I use a Macintosh and Netscape, neither of which are very vulnerable to viruses, so I do not think I was infected, but if anyone is expecting a reply from me, perhaps your message was among those deleted, please send again! It served as a reminder to me that there is yet another new 'cascade' virus around (the sort that come with an attachment that, when opened, attach themseves to the receiver's address box and send an infected message to everyone in it) and folk like me on home computers need to ensure for themselves that their virus protection is kept well up to date. Also, like, me, if you receive a message from a strange email address that you do not recognise, with an odd-looking 'subject' that you cannot understand: delete it! Easier to apologise for a delay in communication than to restore a damaged hard drive Best wishes

OH, YES!! Stupid here, did not check with Cyberlynk when I got a similar copy. I was so curious about what I was suppose to have done to lose my services that this idiot tried to open the attachment. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID. Yes, my McAfee caught it but not until it had affected files which screwed up my recovery system and getting help online with my computer. One of my cardinal rules is to open NO files that do not come from someone I know. Well, if some slime ball sends it as from my ISP, then I was dumb enough to open it. Sorry, did you really check snopes! Your links could be a virus!

Read this:

http://snopes.com/computer/virus/mailserver.asp

virus warning

FYI

Anyone-using Internet mail such as , Hotmail, AOL and so on.

This information arrived this morning direct from both Microsoft and Norton.

Please send it to everybody you know who has access to the Internet.

You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled "Mail Server Report."

If you open either file, a message will appear on your screen saying:

'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful.'

Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC,

And the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password.

This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon.

AOL has already confirmed the severity, and anti-virus software is not yet capable of destroying it.

The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner'.

PLEASE SEND A COPY OF THIS E-MAIL TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS,

And ask them to PASS IT ON IMMEDIATELY!

THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY SNOPES: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/mailserver.asp <http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/mailserver.asp>

It has also been confirmed by Truthorfiction.com

of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which

'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be

received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact

list. This is the reason wh y you need to send this e-mail to all your

contacts It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive

the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you

by a friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified

by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was

discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind

of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc,

where the vital information is kept.

COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU

SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US

Snopes lists all the names it could come in.
