Re: taping up forced air vents

Bob,

Any cooler needs to perform its cooling by moving energy (heat) from

one place to another. No cooler that cannot do this will work.

Evaporative coolers cool by using water's evaporation in dry climates

to send heat (and water) into the air - somewhere..

Air conditioners and other similar devices also work by evaporation

(phase change) They need to have a place where they can exhaust the

heat.. outside..

Even thermoelectric coolers (Peltier devices) get cool on one side,

and hot on the other. (They typically use heatsinks with fans to

dissapate this heat)

Any 'cooler' which consumes energy will most likely be a sum *source

of heat* - not a cooler..

Fans 'cool' people by utilizing their sweat.. our skin transpires water..

So what you describe doesnt just not make sense, its also impossible

due to the most basic and simple laws of physics.. thermodynamics, to

be exact..

it can't exist.. so dont waste your time speculating that it does.. it doesn't!

Bob,

Thank you. Do you have a link to these coolers? I don't understand

how they could use the moisture in the air, especially in arid

climates.

Where do I get Healthy Habitat book?

think ink did not bother me so I was wondering if you purposely had

them use ink which wasn't as bad? Your book talks about how bad the

evaporative cooler is. Have you seen the new self-evaporating

coolers which are portable on rollers? The information says they use

the moisture in the air. This sounds exciting as the evaporating

coolers work great in arid air.

Carl, I could only find links to web companies which sell this unit. I

never did research it as I wasn't thinking of buying one. If I were to

move to Mexico, I would look into one for next summer. I would be

interested in what you think about them. Bob

Bob,

It appears to be like any of the other portable units that chill the

air with a compressor and cooling coils. You must exhaust it to the

outside or you just recycle the heat right back into the room. When

that is done, they do a decent job and are a lot cheaper than central

AC for a small localized room. They say 400 sq ft and my experience

is that would be the maximum on a hot Texas day. More like two of

them for a 20x20 room. A client tried them here last summer and 2 in

500 sq ft was almost okay.

The " self evaporation " part applies to the moisture removed from the

air by the cooling coils. This is a standard refrigeration air

conditioner with compressor and cooling coils. If the coils are below

the dew point (combination of temp and humidity) then the moisture

will condense on the coils and drain into a container.

There pitch is the heat of the compressor and fan helps to evaporate

the moisture from the container and back into the air (thus the self

evaporation claim). That way you don't have to empty the container as

often. (?)

I think that taping up air vents might be helpful too.

I know that I thought of that, and I wondered if

there was some kind of filter you could put on them.

I know I also changed my HVAC filter every month too,

and bought the better type of filters to supposedly

trap mold particles.
