Guest guest
I'm wondering if you're confusing Medicare with Medicaid. Medicaid covers PA hours. Medicare does not. I suspect you are or will be on BOTH Medicare and Medicaid. If so, Medicaid will require you take Medicare Part B. E-mail me here or off-list for more help. My work e-mail is: expind @ comcast.net Kendra is good at this stuff, too. If the private insurance you have is through your dad's or mom's employer and that employer has 100 or more employees, that private insurance will likely be primary, Medicare secondary, Medicaid tertiary. Most employer policies have clauses about disabled adult children that only cover them to a certain age and/or require that the adult child remain a dependent. Check with your parents HR people about the policies. I lost mine when I was no longer a dependent. It was a bit of a catch 22 in that I lived on my own, paid rent, etc...Mom wanted me to keep her health coverage but being her dependent made me ineligible for most of financial aid at my college, and my parents couldn't pay for school. Fortunately, her employer-sponsored health insurance sucked so it was no loss. Medicaid was better. Guest guest
Medicare will cover an aide two to three times a week for bathing only if you another skilled service (like PT or a nurse). L Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Medicare enrollment Hi Guys, I got information today that I will start getting Medicare coverage in January. I automatically am covered by Part A (hospital) but am wondering if I want to enroll in Part B (medical). I currently have 2 private insurance companies, one is a death benefit from my mom and the other from my dad's work. We don't know how long my dad's insurance will cover me but believe my mom's will cover me for life. Mainly I'm currently wanting Medicare for PA hours so can have a break. My packet of information says that Part A covers some PA hours and Part B will cover some as well. What I want to know is which part covers the most hours? Also, if I decide to get Part B, which plan do I want? I realize that Medicare varies from state to state (I'll be under NY) but I figured I could get an idea from you all. Thank you! Guest guest
Regarding MEDICARE home health services: Medicare Home Health Benefit provides care to Medicare beneficiaries who are unable to leave their homes without considerable effort or assistance and require part-time or intermittent skilled care to treat their illness or injury. Medicare pays for home health benefit services based on a 60-day episode of care - meaning that every 60 days the program and your doctor will re-evaluate you to see that you still meet eligibility requirements for the program. In order to be eligible for the Medicare Home Health Benefit you must have BOTH Medicare A and B coverage. You must also prove that you are home bound, or cannot exit your home on a regular basis without the use of a wheelchair or other medical device AND assistance of another individual. You may leave home at any time for medical care, approved adult day care or religious services. Absences from home for any other reason must be infrequent or for short periods of time, such as family events or outings. Lastly, you must require skilled nursing or skilled therapy services. Skilled nursing services include administration of medications, tube feedings, catheter changes, wound care, teaching and training activities, observation and assessment of a patient's condition, management and evaluation of a patient's care plan. Skilled therapy services include: physical, speech/language, occupational therapy. This service DOES NOT cover laundry, house keeping/cleaning, or shopping. Please note that this is a completely different program from MEDICAID. Medicaid will provide more assistance and has a separate eligibility guideline. <3Kendra > > > > > > Hi Guys, > > I got information today that I will start getting Medicare coverage > in January. Guest guest
Thanks Alana and Kendra! You were VERY helpful. I am definitely going to have to do my research. It would be difficult for me to prove that I am home bound since I attend college in another state. I was wondering if either of you know if I would qualify for Medicade in addition to or instead of Medicare? I'll e-mail you off list as well, so we can communicate further. Guest guest
MJ...I haven't had a chance to respond to your PA funding question before now. You can be eligible for Medicaid if you have no more than $2,000 in assets and if you have very low or no countable income. I'm wondering why you're not on SSI since you're over 18. If this is because your parents are helping you, then maybe they can redirect that help and any of your assets into a Special Needs Trust making you then eligible for SSI and Medicaid. Then, each state offers different Medicaid-funded PA services. But, you've mentioned being on Medicare. Is this because you're on SSDI? If your SSDI is high enough, then you might not be eligible for SSI and Medicaid no matter what you do with your assets. I this this case, depending on what state you're in, you could put your internet entrepreneurial skills to work beyond all the volunteer fundraising you do and become self-employed enough to be eligible for a Medicaid buy-in. For more information, call my business number M, W, Th, or F between 1 and 6 pm pacific time and I'll tryto point you in the right direction. You definitely need access to Medicaid. Guest guest
Thanks, Alana. I do get SSDI and it is less than $2,000 a month. I have no other money in my name. I don't pay for housing or cable, electricity, water, etc...NY state Voc Rehab does since I am attending college. Can one be on both SSI and SSDI? See, I have been receiving SSI since I was 3 as a death benefit from my mom being killed at work. After I turned 18 it switched to Disabled Dependent Student and then a few months later it switched to SSDI. I can't be gainfully employed until after college to keep my Voc Rehab. Would be okay if I called you over Winter break? It's almost finals week and I have to study. Let me know, and thank you again! Guest guest
Yes, you can wait to call during your break. Your SSDI payments are very high, far above average, and 3-4x higher than the SSI amount in any state. You will never be eligible for SSI. People are only on both SSI and SSDI if their SSDI is lower than the state's SSI amount. Federal SSI is $620/mo. Some states supplement this. In California it's $856/mo. (one of the highest). The only way you can become eligible for Medicaid is through a state's Medicaid buy-in program. Tell me which state or states in which you're considering going to school and/or living, and I'll look up the eligibility requirements. As for your concern about losing VR support, this is only true if you become " gainfully employed. " Earning something like $200/mo. is not gainful employment and it's not enough to affect your SSDI and Medicare. In some states it is enough to make you eligible for Medicaid via their buy-in program. This is definitely something you need to address before burns out and/or VR cuts you off upon graduation or if you ever have to take a leave. I'm sure Kendra knows more, but I don't think you qualify for care under Medicare's " homebound " rules. Alana > > > Thanks, Alana. > I do get SSDI and it is less than $2,000 a month. Guest guest
MJ, As I think about it more, it's hard to believe that amount is all SSDI Double check both the source and amount of all income before we talk. Alana

Guest guest
, When one changes anything to do with medicare, like address, name, etc. medicare makes you fill out and submit the 30 page form that requires electronic submission and direct deposit. When we called, we were told there are no other options, period. I have no employees. If you make a mistake on any of the pages, you get to start over. It took me over a year and several attempts to get past that point. By then, they had "retired" my medicare number, because I hadn't billed in so long. Then I had to start all over and reapply for a number. The whole process has now been over 2 years and during that time I have received nothing from medicare. In July we submitted our first electronic claims. Nothing. Two weeks ago we found out that MEDICARE MADE A MISTAKE. They assigned us to the wrong state- but did nothing about it. I think we are finally squared away, but the check is in the mail. Ann Goldeen medicare enrollment , From my understanding of the paperwork, they do not give you an obvious option.
