Guest guest
This reminds me of the story my Mom told of her childhood. I think she was maybe 6? She was chasing her brother, or being chased by him, through their house in Cashmere Washington. Their Mom, my Grandma, had a basin of boiling water under the sink into which she had just tossed a bunch of potato and other veggie peels, so as it cooled their hired hand could come get the basin and toss it to the pigs and chickens, warm enough so the animals could eat it before it froze (winter in Washington is cold). During the chase, my Mom slipped and fell back first into the basin of just poured boiled water. Needless to say, she was burned, and blistered. She said her Mom, my Grandma, put her face down on the sofa in the living room and made dressings out of butter and not sure what else, and kept her there face down until she got healed enough to be up. No infection and Mom literally had NO scars! Mom said that her Uncle, a doctor later said, the potato peels had absorbed enough of the heat to save her life and that Grandma did a wonderful job. He was the same doctor who re-set my Mom's arm after she hit a cut glass door knob and broke her wrist. I say re-set it because, again, it was mid winter and they were snowed in so all they could do for a while was splint her on their own. When Grandpa could get out to bring Uncle/Doctor back, Grandpa held Mom's arm/elbow, while Uncle/Doctor re-broke the arm and set it. Can you even imagine that????? Again, she had little to no arthritis in her arm and lived into her 80's. Amazing how much we need now that they did without back then. They are a staple for my vegetarian daughter though, and we are obsessive about avoiding eggs from soy/commercially fed hens. The man who takes care of my cows has chickens, and we get our eggs from him-he feeds them free range in the summer and spring, and veggie/fruit scraps and grains in the winter. It is VERY hard to find chicken feed that isn't also " medicated " , meaning it is full of antibiotics and steroids! CRAZY what goes into our food supply! My cows also get hay and wheat straw, but I am allergic to both of those too, lol. > > > > > >>> >>> Lynn, I have my own cows, but I avoid their milk during the winter, since they need to eat grains then (gluten DOES pass in to milk of grain fed critters) During the times I am without raw milk, I use rice, buckwheat or sunflower/pumpkin seed milk, all of which make a great substitute and are easily made with the Vitamix. I can't do almonds, but do make that for my daughter-Vickilynn's recipe for almond milk is great! You can also do chia, flax, bean or legume milks-all work a charm. (thanks to the Vitamix, that is, lol) >>> >>> > > > > ------------------------------------ > >
Guest guest
Hi Velda, I'm always fascinated to hear real family stories from yesteryear (so much better than " reality TV " ). Your grandma sounds like she was a tough, no-nonsense woman, and long-lived, too. I'm trying to emulate that " old-timey " medical paradigm where much less medical stuff is much healthier. Five years ago, I quit most of my prescription meds and OTC meds (mostly ibuprofen and antihistamines for allergies) COLD-TURKEY. At the same time, I eliminated wheat and most other grain foods, cut way back on sugar intake, and started consuming raw cow milk and other raw dairy foods. BTW, I don't recommend the cold-turkey part to other people, but, yes, weaning oneself off meds using healing foods and nutritional supplements is far superior to suffering from the ever-present side effects of pharmaceutical meds. At 65 years, the only prescription med. I use now is occasionally two different inhaled asthma drugs (bronchodilator and corticosteroid). But I am confident that when I start to increase my intake of raw veggies and fruits (very small amount of fruits), my general inflammation level will decrease, which should decrease my asthma symptoms. (Asthma is really a condition caused/exacerbated by inflammation occurring in the bronchial airways.) Chronic inflammation, as some of you know, is really a prolonged over-reaction of one's immune system. The basic solution, then, is to re-balance the immune system to get rid of this condition. I know Lea Ann is herself currently engaged in an anti-inflammation effort. This is NOT easy or quick to do, but I believe that persistence in finding out exactly what works for each person's body is the key to recovering from chronic inflammation. My new Vitamix was shipped yesterday and should arrive early next week. So, re-balancing my immune system will commence shortly! ! (while on .com) ;-) Lynn G ><<Velda's post trimmed to save space>> > Amazing how much we need now that they did without back then. > Velda
