Could you use either to make coconut butter and either to make milk. Or would

you suggest which to use for each. Thank you

can for the coconut milk with the least added ingredients, but never researched

guar gum, and at first, wasn't aware of the issue regarding BPA in cans. Then

(thanks to someone on this list) I learned about BPA in cans, so I began to feel

like the canned coconut milk probably wasn't the best idea.

the alternative is to make your own using dried coconut flakes and water. Hmmm

sounds like a job for the Vitamix + a nut milk bag!

You mean the flakes or the shreds? YES! They are the same except for size. Either one could be used for either recipe! And BTW, an astute list member (Thank YOU Krista :-) pointed out to me that, "the weight of the shreds appears to compensate for the price difference. I think it says that a gallon of shredded coconut is 3.5 pounds, but a gallon of flakes is only 2 pounds".

I did the math and the shredded coconut is 3.5 lbs in the gallon so it's $5.00 per pound. The flakes only have 2 pounds in the gallon so it's $5.85 per pound. The shredded is cheaper.

I have a one gallon container of the shredded coconut now, but didn't realize the the flakes were so much less expensive. Flakes it will be for me next time!
