Dear fellow Parents,

My son(9 yrs. old) had a Psychiatrist visit today.(same Dr. for a yr.

now)

We did the usual course of everythings well, meds seem to be fine, blah

blah blah.

I mention that one of my concerns since around X-mas time is that

repeats most things he hears in a low whisper either from conversation

or something from the T.V. And seems to babble in this low whisper when

concentrating on something.

The Dr. says that's due to the ADHD. Now, for a few yrs. we had thought

there was ADHD, but in ' formal Psych. evaluation(usually a 5 hr.

process, was an 8 hr. one for ) a year ago there is no mention of

ADHD.

What should I say or ask this Dr. about this thinking of ADHD?

Then I also told him as I have at the last 2 visits that '

mornings are still terrible.

I am having to wake him, I know I've counted up to a dozen times within

an hr. He will actually take a bite of breakfast and fall asleep while

chewing. He puts a sock on his foot and falls asleep. I have made him

stand in the middle of the room to have him get woken up and I come back

to find him sleeping! He gets from 7 to 9 hrs. of sleep a night.

The Dr. says that's due to the Clomipramine(100 mgs at bedtime). But I

comment that he did this even in Kindergarten before he was on meds.

I should add that the Dr. was seeing before the present one had

suggested a sleep test to see if anything was going on while he was

resting. Should I have that done?

Is the problem the Dr., myself or my son here?

dx is OCD, GAD, depressive tendencies, and also self injury.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Lister

I definitely recommend that your son be tested for sleep apnea.

Also, three days of testing did NOT turn up ADHD for my son, but lo and behold

he's got it. So you're not alone!

Hi ,

Hope all is well. It is good to hear from you again. When my son

has started new medications he has experienced an increased need for

sleep for the first few days, but as his body acclimated to the new

medication this side effect has always disappeared. You may need a

second opinion from a qualified specialist referred by your general

practitioner.

Take care.

Thanks for all your responses.

I am going to reread sections of " Teaching the Tiger " . I remember it is

great at seperating OCD and ADHD characteristics.

I am going to mention the sleep thing to our General Dr. and the new

Therapist will be meeting with next week.

That brings me to two more questions here.

Wouldn't it be ok for a General Physician to prescribe these meds?

Especially if I felt that the GP would more compationate, attentive,

less expensive and has better scheduling?(we can't get in to see this

Psych. Dr. any earlier than 5 PM)

The second question is...Is there any way of preparing for this first

visit with a new therapist? This one is a total stranger. The first one

we were seeing was an old aquantance and knew from a baby, and was

always being updated through casual conversation.

She's in the same office as the Psych. Dr. sees, so she has access

to his records.

I know I want to see have a chance at E & RP or play therapy.

Are there certain things I want to make sure I ask?

What have all of you done?
