Guest guest
Hi, Rena. Homemade is REALLY easy and fun to make, but if you want a good store brand, I recommend FAGE brand (pronounced FA YEAH) Good stuff and makes a good " starter culture " for homemade. > > Somebody on this list made a recommendation for a brand of greek yogurt > they liked best (?). Guest guest
My favorite is Fage. I lived in Greece in the early 80's and this is closest to what I remember. I've tried the others like Chobani etc available in stores but Fage is my taste/texture preference. Guest guest
I truly second that! And if you buy the 0% fat - you'll never know the difference. It's just as creamy and decadent as the full fat. Question: Can you use the 0% as a starter culture for making your own? I haven't made my own for a very long time as I love this brand. The 'mouth feel' on it is wonderful when you're craving something delicate and creamy. Guest guest
Good morning ,I use to make yogurt a long time ago. Had a yogurt maker (4 or 5 little cups that sat in an electric base) but got away from it. I don't know if I still have it or not. When you make it at home, is there a difference between greek and regular? (not sure I understand the difference between greek and regular store bought ) I saw some yogurt at Costco the other day and the brand name starts with F but not sure if it Fage. Guest guest
Greek yogurt is really just regular yogurt that has been strained to make it thicker. You can use all sorts of easy methods-even just a mason jar tucked down in a cooler with a heating pad will work, lol. I use my Excalibur dehydrator more often than not, but I have a couple of the electric ones. You can also make it just in a good thermos! To make " greek style " , just strain the thinner yogurt through some cheesecloth (I use a special type of coffee filter)-you can suspend it over a bowl to catch the whey that drips off, which is marvelous for adding to baked goods, or as a super skin/hair conditioner. For homemade yogurt, you will end up with the product of what your culture starter was. I avoid most commercial yogurt since much of it is not healthy as ALL-loaded with fillers, thickeners, flavors, etc, but Fage is a good reliable brand, and is what I buy when I go visit family when I can't make my own. > > > > > > Somebody on this list made a recommendation for a brand of greek yogurt > > > they liked best (?). Guest guest
Yes, you can use the 0 as a culture-any of them will work just fine. You can even use the 0 as a starter for full fat milk, or the full fat as a starter with skim milk-good stuff!Sent from my iPadOn Jan 25, 2012, at 9:49 AM, " Amedee" <L.Amedee@...> wrote: I truly second that! Guest guest
I love Fage yogurt but I always have Stoneyfield regular yogurt in the fridge too. If I run out of Fage I drain the Stonyfield. I just put a piece of paper towel in a strainer and dump the Stonyfield in that. I set the strainer over a bowl and pop it in the fridge until its the consistency I want. Long way of saying paper towel works fine. (I use Bounty Towels but the brand probably doesn't matter) Terry Sent from my iPad On Jan 25, 2012, at 9:54 AM, " " <berrywell@...> wrote: > Greek yogurt is really just regular yogurt that has been strained to make it thicker. Guest guest
I have this yogurt strainer and it works great if you strain a lot of yogurt. Straining either homemade or a store bought plain regular yogurt to a thicker consistency. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000064841/ref=asc_df_B0000648411873439?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER & tag=hyprod-20 & linkCode=asn & creative=395093 & creativeASIN=B000064841 I do have a yogurt maker by Cuispro with 6 little cups. It works great but I don't use it often. I think in hindsight, I would use a maker that makes one big batch than the several little cups at once but that's just a personal preference... Guest guest
I prefer a strainer or unbleached cheescloth/muslin, since paper towels are chemically bleached and may contain dyes. This is probably not a huge issue for most, but being chemically sensitive, it matters to me. > > I : > > > > > > /links/ > > > (this is the Links page where I save the answers to FAQs and Answers, > > Recipes, and LOTS of other helpful information - this page is always being > > added to) > > > > > > > > /links/IMPORTANT_VitamixE\ nthusiasts_Membership__001327149393/ > > > PLEASE DON'T UNSUBSCRIBE IF YOU ARE GETTING TOO MUCH MAIL! Guest guest
Good to know! I always thought the difference between greek and regular was that greek was made from goat's milk, and regular cow's milk. Didn't realize it was a difference in thickness/consistency. > > > > > > > > Somebody on this list made a recommendation for a brand of greek yogurt > > > > they liked best (?). Guest guest
Hi Rena,Start with the plain yougurt, and then you can add any fruits, flavorings to it as you wish! Yummee! I opted to buy a yougurt maker and not the individual 6-cup type, but one that makes one large container, and then I spoon out what I want, just like I used to do from the Fage container from Costco. You can make yougurt without a maker, but it simplifies things, and since my living quarters isn't warm, I needed to set up a lamp anyway, so may as well use a yougurt maker. It pays for itself many times over, and is simple (fun) to make.Ginny From: Rena Glubay <jp17aday@...> Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2012 8:43 AM Subject: Re: Brand of greek yogurt Thanks, Ginny. Guest guest
I don't believe I have seen a coupon for it, but maybe keep watching. They often have both the big container of Fage plain (I think it's a quart) and the small single servings of Fage plus fruit. I just buy the big one because I can add my own fruit per serving or use it in savory applications such as right now am eating a bowl of jasmine brown rice with Fage yogurt and a touch of Braggs liquid aminos. Sorry there was a time gap between when I got this and now because we just got a new router and husband was installing and configuring it. Guest guest
Ha Ha, it wasn't dinner, it was a mid morning late breakfast. I got up late and got busy, then had to allow 40 min to cook the batch of rice I will be using for a few days. Your middle eastern rice and lentils sounds good. Care to share recipe or directions? Guest guest
Sure. Here it is as it is written. I'll put my changes in red. I doubled everything because I have 2 teenaged boys to feed. I haven't made this before but it sure smells good! 1/2 medium onion, chopped1 clove garlic, finely chopped1 TBL vegetable oil (olive)1 C uncooked brown rice 1 TBL tomato paste2 1/2 C water1/4 tsp ground cinnamon1/4 tsp garam masala1/4 C dry lentils1 tsp salt (I stuck with this amount; did not double) 1/2 C raisins1/2 C toasted pine nuts In a large sauce pan, cook the onion in oil, sprinkle on the salt and stirring, until soft, over medium heat. Add garlic and stir for a minute or two. Add rice, and garam masala and cinnamon and stir for several minutes. Combine tomato paste with the water (and cinnamon). Add to the rice along with the lentils. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir in the salt, raisins and pine nuts into the rice mixture. It should be a little watery. Add 1/4 cup water if it is dry. Place mixture in a greased 2 1/2 quart baking dish. Cover and bake for 20-30 minutes. I don't like raisins in food except my granola and I didn't have any pine nuts. Also, I have a skillet that can go in the oven so I didn't transfer to a baking dish. So there you have it!RenaIf God brings you to it, He will bring you through it. Happy moments, praise God.
