That plan sounds good to me! When I had composting worms I always fed them scraps blended up with water in my Vitamix. Now that the worms have been let loose in the garden, my scraps go to my neighbor's chickens :-)

Hi everyone. I ordered my Vitamix last Friday and cannot wait for it to get here! I've been watching youtube videos and doing a lot of reading in preparation.

One thing I'm interested in doing is composting. I've had a garden for years but never got into composting. So I'd like to start once I get the Vitamix. i understand about putting the material on the soil daily but I'm wondering about options in the winter. Rather than go back to the habit of throwing everything away, if the soil is covered with tons of snow, would it be best to get a container and just put it in there? I was also thinking about making an area and build a box over it with a hinged top. Then I could just brush the snow off the top and dump it in. It would not get spread around until spring came and the snow melted so not sure if that would be ideal. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

I use my scraps in worm bins, or make compost tea in the Vitamix by just

blending up my veggie scraps with water-it can be poured right into the garden,

or diluted to water houseplants. I store mine in a " sun tea " jar in direct

sunlight, and dispense it as needed. Done this way, it will develop a " scum " on

the top surface, but it is harmless. With the tea, you can also enrich your

soil or compost pile by just pouring it on. I save all of my veggie scraps for

a few days, week, however long it takes you to get a good half pitcher full,

then blend them all at once-I keep a large mason jar in my fridge just for the

scraps. Worm farming is GREAT fun, easy, and surprisingly NOT messy-what fun it

is to turn olut the worms in the spring and let them work their magic-I turn

them out in to my raised beds and container gardens.

I don't have a compost pile or anything, this year won't be an issue because the

snow will be gone but I'm just thinking ahead. Right now I keep my scraps in the

fridge and just take them to the dump with the trash. It will be nice to be able

to use them. I'm also glad to hear I don't have to do it every day. I live alone

so there is not a ton to begin with.

I'm not keen at this point on doing anything with worming but maybe sometime

down the road. So, if I understand correctly, in the winter, I can just make my

own box in an area I can get to easily and just dump everything in there over

the course of the winter? Then in the spring, just spread it all around?

I think this is going to be the best and most fun purchase I've made in a long

time!

What I do with vegetable scraps is save them in the frig and then boil them to

make broth for soup. Then freeze the broth until ready to make soup.

I don't do composting, but couldn't you just blend up your scraps and pour onto

your garden?
