Hi, Ronaye-why don't we move this over to the OT group, and I will ansswer your

questions. Just go to the " links " on the left and find the OT group-it doesn't

require approval, so you will be right in. I will answer your questions there.

You can see and/or purchase the dehydrator I recommend at

http://www.mymealmasters.com in the webstore section, or if you want the top of

the line Excalibur, you can often find them on craigslist for a lot cheaper than

retail. Hope to see you on OT!

Ronaye, the one I love is the excalibur. You can go to my website if you like at

http://bonniesherbals.com/products/products/19-dehydrator , there is a link there and you'll get free shipping.  Let me know if I can help.  I use it to make so many things.

We just bought a dehydrator. We weren't sure how much we would use it so we wanted to buy an inexpensive one before we bought the one we really wanted just in case it was going to turn into a dust collector. Have had it for a month and have used it a lot. A nice companion to the vitamix at times as we have strained some of our smoothies and made veggies chips with the pulp. We also blended some stewed apples I had put last fall and made apple fruit leather. Here is what we bought:http://www.amazon.com/Nesco-FD-75PR-700-Watt-Food-Dehydrator/dp/B000FFVJ3C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 & qid=1331870225 & sr=8-1we have already added 2 more fruit leather trays so that when we use it we use it at full capacity:We will buy this one in the fall:http://www.tsmproducts.com/detail.php?pid=76 & cat=dehydratorsplease note that this model comes in 2 flavors - chrome shelves or stainless steel shelves. The 10 rack one on amazon has chrome shelves.Although the one that we have works very well, we don't like it because it is made of plastic. However, it is being used at a low temperature and with non acidic foods so we made this choice to try drying/dehydrating inexpensively as mentioned above.I would like to do it naturally, but from what I have read, we can't sun dry since we live in the humid South.2 veggie CSA shares will start delivering soon so we are looking forward to eating lots right away, fresh with the help of the vitamix and then drying and canning what we can't eat now to have for the winter.

I did not see any prices for the TSM company dehydrator, but give

some thought to Excaliber dehydrators. They are made in the US, by

the same family for over 30 years. They specialize in dehydrators.

My Excaliber is around 30 years old now and still is a work horse at

dehydrating and if I need parts they are still there for me. They

are located in Sacramento CA. I don't get anything from them or am I

affiliated with them, I just believe in their Excaliber because it

has done so well for me for so long.

My mother in law has one and loves it! We would buy that one too but we want our food on stainless steel rather than plastic. This way I will be comfortable even drying acid foods (which can leach more plastic chemicals) and more comfortable over all. There are few items in our kitchen made with plastic and we make sure to use them all with food at a cool temperature. Use of non plastic, when available, is very important us. Otherwise, the Excalibers seem like a great product!

is there a place to see the price of these? I am curious, as I

do prefer stainless steel for most things, but don't mind the

dehydrator because it is low temp.

My husband knows the prices and web sites but he has gone to bed now as I continue to catch up with email. The smaller one is $300 something and the larger is $400 something. That is why we went with a $70ish one first to make sure we used a dehydrator enough to justify the money on the expensive model. Since buying the smaller one we have dehydrated several times a week, and some weeks daily and our spring produce hasn't even started coming in yet! So, we are now convinced that we will use it frequently and will probably buy the other one in late summer and sell this one. In our area, used dehydrators are in demand so we expect to get most of what we paid for it on craigslist. Thanks,My Favorite Video for My Little One!

My Excalibur arrived Wednesday and we immediately dehydrated bananas, apples, pears, pineapple and strawberries. What a big hit this was. My family loved the results and the bananas were the biggest surprise, beyond delicious. I have fruit leathers in progress now. What a great combination of valuable kitchen tools in the Vitamix and Excalibur (or other dehydrator for those who own other brands). My only regret is that I didn't start doing this when I was a teenager. At least my kids will know how to prepare healthy snackage and have the right tools to get it done efficiently.EileenOn Mar 16, 2012, at 1:19 AM, Velda <solomon@...> wrote:

Where is the best place to purchase an Excalibur? I want to get one on payday. Also, is a certain model better than others? Our peaches and nectarines will be ready before I know it and I also want to do some bananas and some celery. Thanks.

The Excalibur is great, but I have recently become a huge fan of the Nesco

dehydrator-it takes up MUCH less room, and other than not being able to do

yogurt in it, it works just as well, for MUCH less money! Great for a starter,

but I now use mine instead of the Excailur to save on space. The Nesco is in

the webstore at http://www.mymealmasters.com For anyone who does specifically

want an Excalibur, I recommend checking your local craigslist-I often see them

on there for far less than new, and they can easily be sanitized.

,I ordered my Excalibur directly from the Excalibur folks on their website at http://www.excaliburdehydrator.com/. My model is the 9 tray with a timer (really important if you want to not have to think about turning it off). I also ordered their jerky seasoning as that's the next project. Bought the cookbook too, "Preserve It Naturally". We're very, very happy with it and yes, it is quite big, but we've placed it in a room off the kitchen and we don't hear the fan that way too. There are various sources, from Amazon to the Excaliber company

site. I like my 9 tray because it offers me maximum room. You will

be surprised how fast you can fill it up when you get a load of

produce. I prefer to run it full, but have many times run just a

tray or two esp if it is something with lots of odor such as onions.

I need to go look at the site to see what you mean by which model,

because I have always thought of the decision being 9 tray is best.

I think they do have with and without a timer. I like the timer

because I can set it at bed time and have it shut off when I want,

for something like yogurt that is important.

In addition to the cookbook, I went to the site and printed out

pages of suggestions from the Excal site and put in a binder. A

binder to keep track of what you have done and how long it took and

how thick you sliced something and how many cups of something like

shredded zucchini a full tray was before drying and after (so you

know how much dry is equal to a cup of fresh when you make zucchini

bread, and things like that are so helpful over time.

My model is the 9 tray with a timer (really important if you

want to not have to think about turning it off).  I also ordered

their jerky seasoning as that's the next project.  Bought the

cookbook too, "Preserve It Naturally".  We're very, very happy

with it and yes, it is quite big, but we've placed it in a room

off the kitchen and we don't hear the fan that way too.  It's

not terribly loud, but a fan goes constantly as that is what

moves the warm air over the food.  Duh, right?  LOL.

I think I'm going to buy this one to start out with:

http://tinyurl.com/7ect587

(Nesco FD-80 Square-Shaped Dehydrator)

Remember, you can go to Lea Ann's site:

http://vitamixlady.com/things-i-recommend-appliancesbooksetc/

And click on one of the products to take you to Amazon and then buy your

dehydrator. Then Lea Ann gets the affiliate money. :)

Looks like a good one, but I would never make it with only 4 trays. Just

today I put 4 trays in just of one cabbage to dry, and a fifth tray with

peppers. I hate to put in just a few trays as it takes no more power to

dry 9 than 4 trays. Have fun with it.

I will use the cabbage for soups such as a vegetable soup or a

Portuguese Bean soup and I have not tried but have heard from a

friend who does this, that you can rehydrate the cabbage and use it

for coleslaw. I also use cabbage in smoothie.
