Velda--I had the same question!!!  Do tell !  Growing your own sunflowers is super easy--but hulling them whew....What variety do you grow ?StaceyOn Mon, Mar 26, 2012 at 12:37 AM, Velda <solomon@...> wrote:

Go back a step, please. How are you shelling all those wonderful seeds

you grow?

Sounds like a big job to me. I can buy organic sunflower at my local

Natural foods store, but growing your own would be fun if not for

shelling all those seeds.

I just rinse and soak my raw sunflower seeds over night, then drain them well (the rinsing makes for a clearer milk, since there is a lot of dusty particles on the seeds-I grow my own sunflowers and save the seeds, so I don't know if commercial ones are as dusty-mine are from the way I harvest them from the head of the flower) In the morning, I just rinse them well, throw them in the Vitamix and buzz them up with some good spring water and a pinch of sea salt-I don't measure, but I am guessing about twice the volume of spring water to the amount of seeds, more or less to your desired consistency. I will pay attention tomorrow to see what the ratio is of water to seed. I used to add a squirt of agave nectar to sweeten it a bit, and a touch of sunflower seed oil for the mouthfeel, but now I just do seeds and water. It makes a sort of beige colored milk-not pretty, but right tasty! Sunflower seeds also make a wonderful pudding texture when chilled, if !

Harvesting and hulling sunflowers is INDEED fiddly work. I usually spend a good

bit of the winter patiently doing that very thing-it is one of my winter

" hobbies " , lol. In fact, here it is spring, and I still have a large milk crate

sized box that I haven't finished from last summer. I am blessed with VERY

strong, long fingernails, which make it easy enough, but it still takes a long

time. Over the years, I have tried all sorts of methods for making it easier,

including a contraption that blasts them with air to smash them against the

inside of a box to crack them, and while it does work, it takes just as long,

lol. My daughter helps me too, as do her friends when they are here, but it

does take time..NOT for those with no patience, lol! I grow 9 different

varieties, from huge head ones that are 20 inches across the head, to tiny

little dwarf red sunflowers, and many in between. If you go to my website at

http://www.mymealmasters.com I have a video posted of harvesting from the

heads after drying the heads for several months...you can see where the " dust "

part comes in, as the dried heads are so brittle-you have to pierce them with a

fork to get them to release the seeds...which then need to be hulled if not

saved for sprouting. It is worth the effort though, and they are so very easy

to grow, either in containers or just any old place in the yard.

Thanks, but i just need to update it on the site itself. It is showing up on my

ipad 2 okay. How do you like the HD? I am waffling about whether to upgrade or

not...my daughter wants me to so she can get my ipad2, instead of the 1 that she

inherited, lol.

thank you -= I thoroughly enjoyed watching - but I had no idea how tight they are in the head.

I ended up watching other videos as well - so went the morning - Do you also sprout the seeds.

what type of sunflowers do you grow and do you use the various seeds for different purposees?

thanks

Yes, I sprout the seeds, grow micro greens from them, sunbutter, smoothies, etc.

I grow many different varieties of them, from tiny dward reds to massive ones.

They are so fun and easy to grow, but they are a booooger to harvest!
